Matchbox And Dinky Toys
I grew up at Barforth Hall and left when I was 18. I used to spend my pocket money on toy cars with Mrs Brown in this dark and evocative shop, the memory has never left me. I would also go to buy my parents' Christmas present here every year. My parents still have a cottage on the green and I remember Mr Cree, he was terrifying. Does the bus still have a number 75? I can even remeber our telephone number, Gainford 398!

RE: RE: Matchbox And Dinky Toys
I remember the good old days I spent at St Peter's, and the corner shop where I too bought Dinky toys, my last toy from there was a police car.

RE: RE: Matchbox And Dinky Toys
I loved growing up in Gainford - there were so many places to have adventures as children! Poor Mr Roberts - we loved to play in his farmyard. I am sure he knew we were there but didn't say anything to us.
I didn't buy dinky toys - I am sure my brother did but I remember the shop vividly especially the lower level where there were shoes - it smelled a bit musty there as well It was a dark place but very exciting with all of its bits and pieces. A mysterious place when you are small. We always got friends birthday pressies there - the only place in 'town' really.
I lived on Balmer Hill and there was a large house at the top of the hill - we could see it from our house over the fields. It was on the left as you headed for Ingelton - the schoolmaster's (Peart or Pearce) house was on the right. I never saw anyone in or out of the 'house on the hill'. Does anyone know anything about the place or people who lived there? Anthing you can share would be great.
Thanks
