North Yorkshire memories

Pear Tree House Skeeby

After living in Richmond I bought and renovated Pear Tree House (on the right of this 1913 picture) in 1972.  The previous occupants had died when I found the house it was covered in ivy and I understand at one time Funeral directors operated from the property.

It took eighteen months to renovate PTH into a double fronted Georgian... [more]

Childhood memories.

I have many happy memories of Melsonby as I visited regularly until the 1980's. My father's family (Healey) were from Melsonby and my aunt was a teacher at the C of E school for many years. My father and most of his family are buried in the churchyard in the picture. The right-hand cottage belonged to the Rennison family and as... [more]

Bay Horse Inn used to be owned by Thomas Heslop, according to some web sites on the net. I have the landlord listed from the national census as Thomas Alsop, how long was he the... [more]

The View

In my youth I looked out on this view many times from the Castle Keep. We lived on Westfields Road which can just be seen over to the left of the picture.

Grey Friars Cafe

I lived in Richmond from the age of 6 weeks in 1936 to the age of 17 years in 1953.I loved Richmond, and still do. My father was a racehorse trainer, his stable was on Cravengate, just off Newbiggin. My family were good friends of Alice Fawcett who owned Grey Friars. When I visit on holiday I am always pleased to see... [more]

Richmond Grammar School

I went to Richmond Grammar from 1963 to 1969. I left the area shortly after that and have only recently returned to North Yorkshire. I'm currently trying to get in touch with many of my old school friends. It's great to see this picture!

Ringwood Photographic Memories

We are looking north, with the White Swan on the left and tall trees near the church in the centre. The grass in the foreground would soon bear a 1914-18 war memorial. The village shop and post office in the distance beyond the children still functions, but the shop-like Gilling Club (to the left of the woman in the middle of the road) has become a house.

Villages of Yorkshire Photographic Memories

Looking north past Bridge End Cottage, we see the old chapel of 1879 and Town End Farm. This compact village once possessed all the useful facilities of a rural community - a blacksmith's, numerous thriving shops and a large pinfold to corral stray animals.
