Le Fevers And Coo-Op Denson 'Winkle -Pickers'
I went to Gillingham Technical School in Green Street and at the end of the school day ran down Gardiner Street, making a left turn into Gillingham High Street. This picture shows my homeward view with the Le Fevers store on the left (later purchased by Debenhams) and the station in the distance. On the right was the Co-op where I waited outside for a No 45 M&D bus. Never a boring wait because the Co-op shoe shop had the school-banned 'winkle pickers' shoes by a company called Denson. Only 49/11 for a basic pair of 59/11 for a premium pair - sharp points and Cuban heels! How long could you wear them without a detention!

RE: RE: Le Fevers And Coo-Op Denson 'Winkle -Pickers'
We must have shared a bus home on many occasons. I would have picked it up at Livingstone Circus as I went to St Mary's by the level crossing (previous to that Hempstead). I am 1 year younger than you but my brother went to the Tech school. We lived in the prefabs off Fairview Avenue. If you have not been back to Wigmore you would barely recognise it, it is really built up and is considered THE place to live in the area. Do you remember the old Smallholders club (that once a week had a library) or Fairyland at the other end by the Spyglass & Kettle? Wonderful place to be a child, so much freedom, from the woods all round to the Darland Banks where we would fly our home made kites. Name then was Sheridan and my brother was Robin - known as Shez (because of the surname).
