Glenmavis Primary School
My name was Dorothy Nilsen, I fondly remember Glenmavis Primary School, in late 1950-1960s, and then on to Airdrie High. I lived in a little cottage, 205 Glenmavis Road, just past the Burn and before the first bus stop to the village. I remember wee pals like Elizabeth, Aileen, Jennifer, Margaret and Ian, wee Archie and Willie Wilson. I eventually got a push-bike, and I'd get out to other villages and places just for exploring, adventure and picnics, growing up the village that somehow organised bus trips to Edinburgh and Hamilton and Motherwell, all to do with ice skating or similar.
We played in the surrounding fields and woods, had a post office/sweetie shop, Co-op, a newsagent that did frozen Jubilees, and a chip shop that always seemed to clean his fat out on a Monday.
I've got a couple of pictures, me and the whole class at Glenmavis School maybe 1961-63ish and a lovely one of a gorgeous collie dog Elizabeth and I used to walk for the love of it. Once we'd spent our pocket money we'd hang about for the Saturday church wedding, and if we collected enough, go to Airdire to to get Woolworth's sweeties and pretend at being grown up by trying lipsticks on and getting chased out of stores, ha ha. (Bus fare was a penny halfpenny.)
From Airdrie High, and at 16 my first job was with 'Squaregrip', but we then moved to Edinburgh, mother wanted to be near her sisters when Dad died.
Should that ring a bell with anyone from that era, I'd love to hear from you.

RE: RE: Glenmavis Primary School
Hi, I don't know you but I remember Glenmavis, I lived in Greengairs, about the same time. I am now in england. We used to play school's football with your rotten lot. I had a girlfriend, I think her name was Margaret Prentiss/ Prentice, she went to America when she was about 15. I also went to school with Alec Binney from Glenmavis, I married his cousin, Ann Hutton, her mum was Alec's mum's sister. I don't know the time line, but I'm now aged 59 (oh dear). Jim.

Did not go to the school but used to go on the trips to the ice rinks also on what we all called the mystery tours, one of the girls on the trips had the same name as you but was about 3 years younger than me (I was born 1940). I also knew a Willie Wilson, I think he was a year younger. Do you remember the swing over the burn,, a rope with a knot and 30 foot drop (it looked more like 200 feet to the water if you fell off. There was a field near it that had a surface like a golf ball, the holes were about 2 yards across, and I remember the jubilees, I had a bike as well it was a 10 speed Raleigh dark green... The kids nowadays don't know what they are missing, all PCs and TVs...

I also went to New Monkland School from 1954. I remember having to move to Golfhill primary for a while as New Monkland was closed.
I lived in the Kirkstyle Inn in Glenmavis so the school was not far from my house. I then moved on to Airdrie High for a few years.
I now live near Stonehaven and moved up to this area in 1977 as my husband worked in the oil industry.

RE: RE: Glenmavis Primary School
None of you will know me, it's more likely to be my mum Marjorie or the rest of the O'Hanlons you would know, but I feel so sad reading your comments as it makes me realise the memories were all of happy times of places that no longer exist now! Also, Margaret Prentice moved back to Glenmavis then onto Airdrie but has sadly passed in this last week! All your memories sound very happy, as I myself hold happy memories of a village I used to love dearly! I'm sorry to say it's not the loving community it used to be. If any of you have any questions as you have all moved away I'll be more than happy to help if I can. I like reading your stories and fond memories! Hayley Watson xx

Hi, I also lived in the village very late 1950s until the late 1970s. I used to stay in Glenview Street. We used to play down the park at the back and on Ash-hill, just next to the burn. You are right, they were good times in the village. Sunday School trips were great fun, as were the trips and soirees at Angus Patterson's meeting hall. In those days you could go for walks out to Cleddans and be safe, probably not so nowadays.
