Great-Grandfather

Peperharow Road 1907

My great-grandfather was a swimming instructor at Charterhouse. He lived in the last (?) house on the right, just before the lane leading to Charterhouse. The swimming pool was directly behind the back garden. Before this was built they used to swim in the River Wey which was accessed by a path opposite the lane. The remains of the wooden platform on the river bank still remain. His son took over the job when he retired due to having a stroke after saving someone from the river. If you remember him, I would love to hear from you: john@broadwaycars.com

RE: RE: Great-Grandfather

I was born in Peperharrow Rd in 1935. I remember John Dean. The house he lived in still stands. The Wolf Cubs, St Peter & Paul, had permission to use the Charterhouse baths when John Dean was in charge. We boys used to fish in the river and John was concerned that some of us could not swim and offered advice. I think that the swimming platform that you describe was NOT down the path opposite John's house, but the 'Ginny' left at the far end of Peperharrow road, before Miltons Woods. Of interest, the last house on the LEFT before Milton Woods was a sweetshop and grocers during the war. Charterhouse grounds, was my playground during my early years. I left Godalming to join the RN in 1950. I still have two spinster sisters, living the house where I was born. Phil Le Houx Kingsbridge, Devon Philip.123456@tiscali.co.uk

RE: RE: Great-Grandfather

I lived in Peperharow Road for many years and learned to swim in the 'Ginny'. When I was at the Grammar School in Godalming, we had swimming lessons with Mr. 'Ted' Dean at the Charterhouse Baths. He taught me to do the 'Crawl' in a very professional manner and I was thrilled to demonstrate it to the rest of the class. HOWEVER when it came to learning to dive - I was not very good and was singled out by Mr Dean as an example of how not to do it!!! The little shop mentioned by Philip Le Houx was at the end of our row of terraced houses and was owned by Mrs. Browne. She sold a variety of goods, including sweets and cigarettes and was always ready for a chat. There were lots of children of similar ages living in Peperharow Road after the war and we too roamed Miltons Woods and Charterhouse. Our little row of houses was demolished in the early 1960s to make way for new houses to buy. Families I remember are the Winnans, Glaziers,Barsbys, Riddles, Cox's, Beagleys, Grindels, Coveys, Randalls to name but a few. Any of you still out there? My maiden name was Marshall.

RE: RE: Great-Grandfather

I lived opposite to Mr Dean Jnr house and entrance to Racquet Court Hill in, what was then, two semi-detached "tied cottages"; ours was nearest the passage leading to Hell's Ditch and Sarggasson Field. He had two dogs OC, a black Labrador and GYP, a yappy little Terrier. He took a dislike to my pal, Tony Davey and his dog TINCO, and eventually got a court order to have TINCO killed. His dogs received no favour from us after that. At the bottom of the steps leading from the racquet courts to the playing fields is a tree with TINCO's name carved in it.
