Hampshire memories
How lovely to find some photographs of The Flying G, but I am surprised that there are no other comments when so many people went there. I went there twice, once in 1966 and again in 1967. The first time I was studying at St Godric's in London and Maureen Smith was going there in the holidays. She was a very... [more]

I was born in a bungalow on the corner of Coxstone Lane in 1962 and my nanny lived in a thatched cottage called Brookside in Coxstone Lane. I had some very dear friends on that lane, I would love to know what happened to them all.

I stayed at Twin Oaks one night in October 2008. I arrived very late after escaping from some motorway works madness, but my hostess was very welcoming and supportive. She explained that the twin oak at the front of the building is much admired, especially by the Francis Frith company photographer when this photo was taken. I was visiting because my... [more]

The policeman seen standing on duty outside the public house has been indentified as PC 65 H R Hood. He was the village 'Copper', spending 15 years of his service in Cadnam. This was a favourite traffic duty spot in those days, as this was the main crossroads of the Southampton to Bournemouth and the Winchester to Lymington highways. Even though... [more]

My mum Barbara Wiltshire [nee Pritchard] was brouhgt up here with her 11 brothers and sisters. She is always reminding us that she had to walk 3 miles to school and one of her brothers used to bunk off and hide in the woods until it was time to come home, sadly she has dementia now, which took hold of many... I have just read about a memory relating to Emery Down Church and it has made me think about my childhood again. My grandparents lived in Northerwood Avenue, Swan Green in Lyndhurst and we regulary stayed there as children. When we stayed with my grandparents we used to have to walk up the hill and visit my great grandmother... [more]

Petersfield - A History & Celebration
Petersfield now has both open-air and enclosed swimming pools, together with a sports centre which is named after the town's annual Taro Fair. The fair, which is of ancient origin and held annually on the weekday nearest to 6 October, brings revellers from many miles to enjoy the fun. It is a fact that there are very few things that you cannot do in Petersfield - it is a place... [more]

Petersfield - A History & Celebration
As to the future, Petersfield has recently been surprised by the announcement that housing in the town will in future be slowed down from the accustomed allowance for a gradual increase in population. A report has recently been received which virtually rules out greenfield development for the town in the near future. This, combined with Petersfield's inclusion in the South Downs National Park, ensures that it will remain a desirable place... [more]

Petersfield - A History & Celebration
Sam Hardy For many years, from the early 1900s up to the Second World War, Sam Hardy was looked upon as the squire of the town. He ran a pack of hounds, and cut quite a figure in hunting pink; the more so when the hounds were brought into the Square before heading off down Sheep Street into the country. The hounds were kept in kennels next door... [more]
