Lovely Memories Of Godstone
My Mum and Gran came to Godstone with me as a baby, we moved from Croydon because of the Second World War. My granddad, Alfred Sreatfield, now dead, had helped to build 13 Salisbury Road. I was christened at St Nicholas Church, and went to school in Godstone, and later in Bletchingly. I played on the green, and waked to school along the bay path, we scrumped apples and had lots of fun. We left Godstone in 1960, however I love to return and walk through the churchyard where my mum and grandparents are buried, it is so good to come back if only for a day, I still feel I belong there. My name then was Rosemary Waite.

Happy Childhood 1950 Onwards
I lived in Hillbrow Cottages on the Eastbourne Road from 1950 to 1970s. My father, George Mison, worked in the sand quarry in Bletchingley and mum, Elsie, was a housewife. There are only 12 cottages at Hillbrow and so there were about 7 children around the same age. David, Susan, Michael, Wendy, Ian, David and me. We used to play up on the common or paddle in Diana's Fountain. If you went further along you could swim in the river, it wasn't unusual to see a snake or rat swim past. It used to be full of all the village children if it was hot. Some times we would take a sandwich and go up White Hill for the day. There was Hillbrow Guest House on the corner of Hickman's Close. You could go to the back door and buy ice lollies. They were lovely people, it was sad when it was knocked down and new houses were built. No one ever locked their doors and if anyone needed help... My Childhood in Godstone 1944 - 1959
I was born in Eastbourne Road, in a house opposite the sand pits and the common. My name was Wendy Mitchell. With my sisters and brother I would spend hours picking bluebells and primroses and climbing trees there. At the bottom of our garden across a small field was Leigh woods which had a stream running through it. We would cross the stream via a fallen tree at what was known as Diana's fountain and we would play in the stream on hot summer days and collect chestnuts in the woods there later in the year. I'm sure that it is probably still much the same there today and that the same things are done by children today. I walked up Church Lane to school each day and sometimes after school I would walk down The Bay to the village to buy sweets or a comic in Fitters opposite The Green or in Bookers the newsagent. The Happiest Time of my Life
I started living here in 1969 when I married my wife Juettee Burgess who was the riding instuctress at Stangrave Hall stables. I was stationed at the Guards' barracks in Caterham when we met and when I finished in the army I started work at Bristows Helicopter near Redhill. It was the happiest time of my life, the people were most kind and I made lots of really good friends, I wish I could go back. It was called Stangrave Hall when I lived there.

My Godstone
I lived in Godstone from 1947-1975 when I moved to Dorset. In those days I was Wendy Knight. At one time my father worked at the bakers, Broad's it was called, it was two doors down from the shop on the green, his brother Sidney had R G Knight's the butcher, R G being their father. I spent a lot of time down the stables, first at Barretts, then Stangrave Hall. We also had great times at Leigh mill stream or Diana's fountain as we knew. Lots of memories came flooding back when I found this site. Like skating on the Bay pond or playing down the bog, looking for newts in the hilly fields in very smelly ponds. My father-in-law was Frank Coombe who had Foster Down Farm when it was a dog kennels.
Living in Godstone 54 -74
I was born in Godstone in Ivy Mill Close, just the other side of the Green. I walked to the primary school along the Bay Path. My Gran lived in St Mary's Almhouses right opposite the school and I would go there for lunch. The chapel attached to the almhouses is beautiful. I was married in St Nicholas' Church adjacent to the almhouses. The village has now changed a lot. I remember going to Sylvie Barnard's shop for my sweets on the way to school and to Ken the butchers opposite the pond on the green. Addison's the bakers had lovely cakes. My Mum worked in the post office for many years and I would go there after school and stamp the letters! The pictures brought back lots of memories.
