Happy Days
Goldenhill (Happy days)
My first memories of Goldenhill are visiting my grandparents during the terrible winter of 1947, the snow was said to be five feet thick on Oldcott Drive where it had drifted from across the fields.
I also remember flying a kite my grandad had made, we flew it on starvation banks at the top of Kidsgrove bank, I think these were the waste tips from old coal mines which had been worked out, although there was still a footrill working, I remember it had an old ex US army truck which used its winch to pull tubs to the surface.
My grandad used to take me to the working mans club on a Sunday lunch time, it was on the High street close to Stoniers bus garage, he would treat me to a bottle of pop & a bag of crisps.
There were lots of bus companies in those days, Stoniers & Jeffreys were in Goldenhill & the PMT garage was at the end of the level near the Red Lion pub.
The PMT buses had a clock at the top of Kidsgrove bank just oppersite to the Travellers Rest pub & the conducter had to clock in at the clock each time the bus passed it.

RE: RE: Happy Days
I remember the punch clock at the top of Kidsgrove Bank. There was also one on First Avenue, just down from what was then Kidsgrove Secondary Modern School before the road swept round the big corner, past the Parish Church and into The Avenue.
I used to work at the stables behind the pit tips, off Rodgers Street. Vera Neat taught many, many city kids to ride. Myself, and others, mucked out the stables, cleaned tack and walked learners on leading reins to earn free rides.
The pit tips were great fun for sliding down, too. We used a variety of contraptions to career down the slopes. How we never ended up mangled on the busy A50 is a wonder,
There was the Red Ash Path that went down to Stone Bank Road. We used to walk from Talke to Goldenhill, usually via Bath Pool, sometimes across Acre's Nook.
Fond Memories - and as you say HAPPY DAYS.
