Shops I Have Loved...

High Street 1956
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

I grew up in Bath Terrace in the early 1960s and the photo of Wilkinsons brought back memories of its pre-supermarket days of high dark wood counters, butter in barrels and the smell of roasting coffee. Pumphreys with the pastel coloured sugars and exotic coffee beans, Moods where I bought a first gift for my mother of a tiny china cat in a woven basket (I still have it), Thorpes the hardware shop which I think is still there....I have the family's first electric Xmas tree lights we bought from there! They still work and have never needed a new bulb! Paradise slices from Robson and Porteous, wonderful creamcakes and Shrewsbury biscuits from the delectable Smythes, sweets and the first soft ("Tastee-Freez") ice cream from Hennells, Arkles the butchers where huge knives were wielded so noisily on the wooded butcher's block that my little brother and I were scared to go in. Henderson's the greengrocer, the Royalty cinema of course endlessly playing the Shadows' "Wonderful Land" between items. The Toddle Inn cafe where we had our first tastes of Pepsi Cola and the coffee machine made loud splurging noises. Woolworths where my fascination for all things gardening was born, with Cuthberts seeds and roses, and shiny red covered notebooks for 6 old pence. My mother would also buy beautiful clothes for us from a little old lady called Miss something or other who owned a little baby linen shop, Baby Time I think. We loved Central Park, and the little hall there was hired for my grandparents' golden wedding celebrations in 1966. Happy days indeed!

RE: RE: Shops I Have Loved...

What memories you brought back. I grew up in Beaumont Terrace and remember all the shops you mentioned. My Uncle used to work in Arkles the butchers and I too did not like going into it. The shops you did not mention that I remember are Stewarts the garden shop, Campbells the drapers and of course the chippy. The Toddle Inn was a favourite place for my friends and I to meet. Can you remember Mary who worked there. Happy days.

RE: RE: Shops I Have Loved...

Yes I remember the chip shop but probably I was a bit young to recall the others! When Mum used to take us into the Toddle Inn we were primary school age so I didn't take much notice of the staff, but I remember Mum's coffee came in a glass cup (which seemed very odd at the time) and the delicious smells and strange noises were fascinating. The last day we benefited from the excellent chip shop was the day we moved away from Bath Terrace...from which, down the old coach road which ran alongside the "Wrecker" field between the terraces and the railway line, a Mrs Curry had a tiny grocer's shop. I wonder if anyone remembers that?

RE: RE: Shops I Have Loved...

I can remember the shop you are thinking about, it was in between Harley Terrace and Wolveleigh Terrace but I remember it being owned by Mrs Kennedy whose son used to go to school with my brother. It would be before your time I expect but there was also a shop in between Beaumont Terrace and Hyde Terrace owned by Mrs (Granny) Goddard. She was a real harridon, we used to play her up something rotten. We had many a telling off about that. =There was also Seerys shop at the bottom of Hyde Terrace and I can remember that they also had a crisp making place there. They also owned the famous Toddle Inn. What happy memories thinking of all these places. Another shop that I used to enjoy going into was Corbeys sweet shop (opposite the Clinic).

RE: RE: Shops I Have Loved...

One of my favourite shops was the Toy Cupboard which was where Robertsons the photograpers is now. I was lucky to be the grandaughter of the owners of Robson and Porteous, the bakers, and had many happy times spent there. I also remember Maynards the sweet shop and Moods the gift shop.
