R & H Law
My Grandfather, Harry Dewhurst, was a partner/owner (I am not sure of the exact commercial position) of R & H Law (Main Street, Grange-over-Sands) in the 1950s. I remember R & H Law having all all four shop fronts as per this image. The shop sold carpets and furniture; including supplying carpets to local businesses. My late aunt told me that the Belsfield hotel in Bowness still has carpets supplied by my grandfather; who lived on Methven Road in Grange, with his wife Lily.
Anyway as a young boy I enjoyed trips to Grange and my grandparents, meeting my two cousins, and playing in the ornamental gardens. During the 80s/90s my two children enjoyed doing the same, and my daughter in particular now has the same love of Grange as I have; though with different memories. My memories are now only shared with my two cousins, my brother being too young to remember my grandparents.

My Grandad
My grandad convalesced here, James Taylor. He died in 1976. I hope to take my mum to see the place this year. I have 3 postcards of the place, one of the statue, the bowling green and the entrance drive.
THE GRANGE HOTEL
I worked at the Grange Hotel from 1983 until 1986. I lived in Grange for another six years at The Cottage, Graythwaite Manor. I left Grange in 1992 with my family when we moved to Australia. Enjoyed seeing the old photos of Grange, especially the one of the Grange Hotel.
Memories of Cumbria

I have lived in the pretty village of Cartmel all my life and I love the quiet, calming atmosphere we have here. Once a friend and myself used to walk through the village with a nanny goat called Nancy and her 2 kids, we'd arrive in the square and rest at the market cross with the goats playing on the "fish slabs" which caused a lot of amusement to the visitors, who in turn must have thought we were slightly mad! Near by is the stately home of the Cavendish family, Holker Hall, once upon a time the Duke of Edinburgh used to compete in the carriage driving trials here and on the sunday himself and The Queen went to church at Cartmel. The Priory church is the main feature of the village(f1188). I once sang in the choir, we were on Songs of Praise and also on Look North, with Stuart Hall. Feathers in Our Hair
My aunt and uncle went to live in Flookburgh in the early 1950s. My mum, brother and myself went to stay with them on holiday. I can't remember where we got the coach to but my uncle laughed when we got off the coach with paper carrier bags with our clothes in (no suitcases for us in those days). The road was a country lane (going down the road at the side of the cross) towards the sea. I remember there was a farm on the right hand side where we used to buy milk and further along on the left was their little house (it could have been a bungalow). We went to Humphrey Head where we collected sea gull feathers and put them in our hair pretending to be Indians hiding in the dunes. I still have a photograph of us with the feathers. First Kiss
My wife used to live in the house on the right, Number 5 Mill Close. When we were courting I would walk her home from our nights out and we use to sit on the bridge wall. This is where I had my first kiss from her, she was 17 and I was 19 years old. We have been married now for 46 years and have two children and 4 grandchildren. This is where it all started.
School House
My maternal grandma, Mrs Rowe, lived at school house as caretaker for about 40 years until she died in 1978. My mum Edith was brought up here, as were her sisters, Irene, Dorothy and Marjorie and her brother Alfred better known as" Sonny". We all, i.e. aunties, uncles and cousins, used to stop at Nanna Rowes for a few weeks in the summer holidays and I have nothing but happy memories of all the lovely people and places. Anyone who went to Holker School in the 40's till the 70's will remember her, she also worked at Holker Hall in the kitchens and cleaning, even used to pluck grouse at home, in the kitchen, for the Cavendishes. My grandad, Alf Rowe, sadly died in 1963, but he used to work at the shipyards at Barrow and later at the old army camp at Flookburgh.
