Bookham Cottage

Leatherhead Road 1904
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

The fence on the right is the end of the boundary of Bookham Cottage.  This was a pretty cottage-style house set well back from the road.  In the late 1920s it was bought by Herbert Allen, my grandfather. The gardens were to the back of the house and (from the photos I have seen) very beautiful. The land was bounded by the footpath which ran from the corner of Crabtree Lane to the top of the recreation ground. Many years later the property was sold and is now an estate of bungalows. The road through the houses is called Allen Road after Herbert and Ellen Allen.

RE: RE: Bookham Cottage

Weird is right.  If it is who I think it is, you and I spent a Christmas together about 52 years ago with our mutual cousin Graham.  My niece, Sylvia's sister Doreen and another cousin Jill all live on Vancouver Island. I go back to Bookham sometimes and although it has changed a bit and sort of merged with Leatherhead and Fetcham now it is all basically the same. Sylvia still has a lot of memories of Bookham so let me know if you want info. Paula.

RE: RE: Bookham Cottage

Hi Paula, I don't recall spending a Christmas with you at any time? My maiden name was Carr. Graham is of course my cousin. Rosemary Davie nee Bellows and her sister Tricia are my other cousins. Everyone in Bookham knew the name Bellows as Uncle Ron ran the local Taxi service and also had the little Kiosk at Bookham station. I never really knew any of Auntie Sylvia's family but remember my Mum talking about different ones. Certainly remember hearing Doreen's name. Did Jill ever live with Auntie Sylvia and Uncle Den when they lived in Bookham? I would love any info you have. Pat.

RE: RE: Bookham Cottage

HI Pat. I think Paula has confused you with Patricia (Trish) Bellows. If I have my facts straight your mother was one of the 4 Eaton kids from Woodlands Road, one of which was my father Dennis. I remember Uncle Ron and Aunty Doris very well. The other sibling was Uncle Bill who had a son called Peter , whereabouts unknown. I think Uncle Bill lived in Bookham up until his death a few years ago, but I could be wrong on that one as I moved to Australia in 1972 and sort of lost touch with the family "ins and outs." I don't recall Jill ever living with us in Bookham. How did I find this site? Our resident genealogist, Paula, alerted me to it. Graham

RE: RE: Bookham Cottage

Hi cousin Graham long time no see. Yes it is me Pat not Trish. I think Paula has me confused with Trish. My Mum was your Auntie Rene. After I sent the last e-mail to Paula asking about Jill I remembered it was Sally and Robin who lived with you. Uncle Bill died quite a number of years ago now, I think he was about 72 He would have been around 94 now. My Mum died in 1984, she was 67. My Dad died in 2002. He was 82. Cousin Peter as far as I know still lives in Fetcham. We have to find another means of contact other than this site. Just amazing I found this site atall. I was looking for some info for our little Granddaughter for a school project regarding her English roots< the other half is Chinese> saw the names of two people, one I knew Tony Davie and the other I knew of Paula. Where do you live in Aus? We live in North Vancouver. Paula thanks for alerting Graham. Pat.

RE: RE: Bookham Cottage

Here is another" BLAST FROM THE PAST". Jill Brewster. She is a neighbour. Says she dated Mike Haliwell and was friends with Liz Savage. I know she also dated Eric Cranleigh? who cousin Trish went out with at one time.

RE: RE: Bookham Cottage

My mother, Gwen Goodchild (nee Allen) is also a grandchild of Herbert and Ellen Allen. She has no memories of Bookham Cottage herself but she does have some small photographs, which she believes to be of the cottage, with family members standing outside. She wondered if anyone could confirm whether the cottage had verandah style woodwork to the front or back? Any information would be much appreciated.
