Memories of Merseyside

"Hoylake Baths"

I recall happy memories of the Bathing Pool. It had two fountains spurting over fake rocks. We used to climb on these to cool off. In those days the Summers seemed to go on forever. The baths used to attract large attendances in those days.
I can remember when the baths were closed on warm evenings. With a crowd of friends we would climb over the rear walls to enjoy free swimming until the police came and we would all scarper. Great fun & laughs, life was so much better in those days.
The baths were eventually closed by the Council because of falling attendances and running costs but a local group of volunteers was formed to run it for a few years. They did a great job but eventually gave up, the equipment was becoming too costly to keep going and the council wouldn't help.

Mum would take us down to the Hoylake Baths, I don't know how many at the time, but she ended with 8 of us. Pile us on the bus at Irby, with the picnic basket and sundries. We had great fun on our outings to Hoylake.

Tracing Family Tree

Hi, I'm trying to trace the family of Judith Jones or James that married a Samuel Reed, they then lived at Heath Farm, Childerthornton, can anyone help? I was told Judith was born in Storeton, but no such match has come up on this site.

Lighthouse Pub

I look back on my time living in Hoylake as a child with great fondness. We lived in the Lighthouse pub for about 3 years. We were there when it closed. I can remember going down to the beach to see the lifeboat.

Big Christmas Tree in The Cross, Moreton

One of my fondest memories is of the big Christmas tree at Moreton Cross all lit up, you could see it way up Pasture Road in the dark and to a small child it was magic. I also loved the great hot summers and the very interesting shops in Moreton at that time, much better then than today, happy days at the shore, lots to do and see, spent hours there with my family, that's all most people could afford then, a day at the shore, but we loved it.
Regards,
Margery Hall
