Cumbria memories

What a lovely quiet atmosphere it had, apart from the mooing of the cows on the farm and the sound of the house martins singing in the background there was silence and peace. We sat on the grass lawn... [more]

Evacuated to Langley on Tyne in 1940 as an 11 year old, my memories relating to this peroid remain undimmed. It was a strange world to me, coming as I did with many other children escaping the war. I was taken into care by a farming family.

You see the wooden building in the background? This is where we went for our school dinners when I attended Allendale Junior school. We walked in pairs along the road and down the path. Earlier on we might see the cooks leaving the kitchen which was next door to Jo Bells and wheel the dinners down on a trolley. Sadly the... [more]

My maternal grandfather was born in Stockton on Tees in 1892. His father died, and his mother remarried resulting in him being farmed out to live with two maiden aunts who lived in "Tarset". My brother and I have tried in vain to find exactly where this might have been (I now think that Tarset was in fact a parish). His... [more]

The church, dedicated to St Cuthbert, was designed by John Dobson and built between 1826 and 1828. It consisted of an aisleless nave and a narrow west tower with an octagonal spire; the chancel was added in 1900. About one mile to the north-west is the bastle house of Low Old Shield, one of many fortified farmhouses built during the days of the Border... [more]
