Ancestors
James and Charlotte Brooker and son Harry (born 18.09.1869).
Anyone know them or where they lived?
Llanfrechfa Granger Nursing Home
I don't know when it opened as a nursing home nor when it closed and can find no information of that period but I was born there in September 1945 at a cost of 3 17s 6d (I still have the original invoice!) and proud to have been born in Llanfrechfa, where I was also confirmed and eventually married (for the first time) in August 1966 at All Saints' Church. And I used to visit the 'Gate Hangs Well' pub. Though it has been many years since I was back in Llanfrechfa, it is my birthplace and I will tell everyone that fact even if Llanfrecha is not known to many... though it has had to be translated into Arabic many time during my travels much to the puzzlement of the translator!
Station Road
Hi, I used to lived in Tynewydd Road as a small child. My name is Hook. I then moved to number 28 Station Road, I lived next door to Mr and Mrs Gazzi who ran the coffee bar in Pontnewydd. My father's name was Brinley Charles Hook(deceased) and my mother's name is Alice. My grandparents were Betty and William Charles Hook, my grandfather was known as Charlie (both deceased).
My brother's name is Nigel, he still lives in London and has his own business as a theatrical designer, my sister's name was Sharon (she sadly died in 2007) and my baby sister is Tracy who lives next door but one to me in Southville area.
I can remember the station in Pontnewydd, and playing in the fields at the back of Station Road/ Tynewydd Road as a child, I think there is a complex on the area now.
Growing up in Croesy
I grew up in Croesyceiliog at Raglan Court next to the playing fields and I went to Abyschan Grammer School. There was no bypass road then, and the railway was still was bringing coal from the valleys down to the docks in Newport. I used to lie in bed as a child and hear the train shunting past. In summer was the sun was still high and, though it was bed time, it was too light to sleep. I used to lay in my bed and listen to the sounds of people still up and playing in the fields outside.
I remember the woods in spring and the bluebells. My grandmother used to love the bluebells and my siblings and I would pick them for her. Mountains of them, of course.
My usual childhood troubles were often met by an escape to the woods, and I still can see the sunlight shining through the trees, filtering through the wooded paths I used to know so well.

My name is Gary Wilson. I moved to 12 Stiels court, Coed Eva from Scotland, my mum's name was Jannete Wilson, she worked at the Blinken Owl pub, and my dad's name was Robert Wilson. I went to Coed Eva primary school and was at Fairwater high school for 1 year as we moved back to Scotland, appromximately 4 years we lived at Coed Eva. I can remember the Blinken Owl pub being built, we use to play on the building site! I am 48 so names of some friends have been forgotten, a name I remember is Andrew Toggle, his dad coached Coed Eva under 10s, Coed Eva split into 2 teams, I then played for Coed Eva United, also played for a team called Race, also I had a trial for Cwmbran under 10s. I have been back to Coed Eva twice in 37 years and still have the memories as it was yesterday. It's old looking but I will always remember my childhood in Coed Eva.... Read more

School in Gibbs Road Area of Newport
I attended Hatherleigh Secondary Modern School from 1955 to 1959. I have attempted to locate photographs of the school at that period but have failed. It was a beautiful old Manor house with with all sorts of land, tennis courts and green houses. Does anybody have photo copies of any pictures that I can use in the book that I am writing.
I am also looking for a picture of the Kensington Club that is or was located on, I believe Victoria Park Avenue.
