Devon memories
Reverend Green
I remember the Reverend Green used to come to North Bovey School and tel us some very interesting stories of his travels in Africa and other countries where he had travelled. Does anyone remember Miss Jones and Mrs Watton? I went to North Bovey School from 1958-1964. I loved North Bovey and its school, they sure have changed, times, haven't they? Nice to see the pictures of the old church, hope to visit soon. Lindsay Baldwin
North Bovey School
I went to the school and lived in a home in Manaton, we went by coach, it seemed miles away. One of the teacher lived in one of the bungalows on the left just before the school. I have now moved to Devon and been back to see the school and the hall next door it was used for indoor games/gym.
Racing
I worked in a racing stables in Manaton, we used to exercise up on the moor. 3 other girls were there too and it was great fun. The yard moved to Somerset after and I went with it, wonderful days. Hi Sam, Hi Brian.
Heather And Gorse Clog Morris Entertain at Widecombe-In-The-Moor
It was a fine summer evening in June and the dancers and musicians of the Heather and Gorse Clog Morris team met at The Old Inn at Widecombe to put on an entertainment of morris dancing and music.
Although the village appeared quiet this was deceptive as no sooner had we all struck up some lively tunes in front of the Inn than a very large party of school children appeared! They were visiting from their junior school in Shaftesbury and gathered round along with their teachers to watch the dancing. The clog dancers looked splendid in their blue and white dresses and shiny black clogs and put on a good display of garland and stick dances. The Heather and Gorse band provided a medley of toe tapping jigs and polkas and I joined in the music making with my small piano accordian.

My Early Years
When I think of Devon, and in particularly Bellever I think of home.
I lived in Bellever from the age of 4 to 13, after moving with my family (dad Denis, mum Gracie, sisters Cyndy, Alison and Elaine, and brothers Bill and Steve). The thing I enjoyed most was swimming in the river, and going for walks on the moors and through the woods. In the summer my family used to spend every Sunday by the river. It's where my dad taught me to swim, I can remember saying to him "look I'm swimming" but secretly having my hands on the bottom. Our extended families used to come for visits. and we would pack a picnic and go whortleberry picking, up on Bellever Tor, and my mum and aunts would make pies and jam with the fruit. I can also remember going into bluebell wood with my sisters and brothers to pick bluebells and primroses for our mum.

Painting of Chagford Mill 1911
I have an album that belonged to a member of my family in years gone by. In this album, my ancestor's friends have made drawings, sketches, ditties and paintings. There is a beautiful painting entitled "Chagford", which appears to be Holy Street Mill, painted by Edwin Jackson, 1911. Holystreet
I was a pupil at Holystreet from 1956 till it closed as a school a few years later. I have vivid memories of Miss Watson and Miss Thompson, also Miss Wyatt and Mrs Ruegg. It was a beautiful place for a school, I remember the chilly dips in the river and many nature walks in the grounds, the lovely chapel and the wisteria arch at the back where we had an afternoon rest. I also remember getting my knuckles rapped, though I forget what my crime was! My maiden name was Lewtas, my Dad was the G.P. in Chagford, and my brother, Stephen was also a pupil at Holystreet. I have one picture and can remember quite a few of the names. I remember the long trudge up the hill, often walking with Elizabeth Sturdy and the Hayter-Hames girls, who I still see.
