Evacuation During WW2
My Mam was evacuated to Hallbankgate, Brampton for a short time during the Second World War. She stayed (with her little sister Marina and my Grandma) on the farm of brother and sisters Willy, Maggie and Betty Blaine (could be spelt Blain or Blane). They then kept in touch until Betty died (the last of the three). I can't remember the name of the farm and wonder if anyone in the area has any information?
Thankyou,
Jane Gallagher

RE: RE: Evacuation During WW2
My name is Margaret Dearan, formerly Dixon, and I lived at Howgill adjoining the farm of the Blain family at Burtholme. The farm was close to Lanacost and was a general farm with cattle etc. We knew the family very well and beside the fact that Katie Blain became my Aunt through marriage to my Uncle John Little, brother of my mother. I remember all the Blain's well, Betty used to work in the post office at Brampton and on occasions I remember borrowing her bicycle to get to work when my own bicycle was punctured. The Blain family on retirement moved to Hallbankgate and lived in a house called Pallin house. Later on Katie and my Uncle John went to live with Betty. I lived on the farm at Howgill which was farmed by my grandad. Katie Blain, my Aunt and Uncle John lived after marriage at Townhead Walton. Regards, Margaret

RE: RE: Evacuation During The Second World War
Hi Margaret, Thank you so much for replying. My mam died recently and it's lovely gathering extra bits of information which we don't have records of. She loved her time on the farm, even though they didn't stay long as my grandma was too worried that my grandad wasn't looking after himself properly! He worked in the shipyards in Wallsend. My mam was Lavinia Davison (although she hated the name and was always known as Lynn in later years). Her married name was Cowgill. She kept in touch with Betty and I remember the Christmas cards, written by Betty even as she became more frail. I also remember visiting her grave back in the 1980s with my mam, dad and little sister. The Blains were clearly a lovely family and my mam always kept her happy memories of them and her time on the farm. Thank you again, Jane Gallagher.
