Our Happy Days in Ashburnham Road
My family lived in a prefab in Ashburnham Road. Dad worked for the Home Office, Mum stayed at home. Looking back, they were happy days - long summer days, adventure trips over to Ham pits, being yelled at by Jimmy Edwards whilst playing Polo - we used to collect polo balls. At the end of Ashburnham Road there was Secrets Farm. I fell into Ham pond many times, we used to go there fishing for tabpoles. I also remember Dunkleys and the butcher, I think his name was Beal,he had a hair lip and sold Mum or one of her friends meat with maggots. I also remember Dr Bagley, I fell under his car on my bike. Yes, I had a very happy childhood. I would like to hear from anyone that remembers these times.

RE: RE: Our Happy Days in Ashburnham Road
The Butcher was Frank Birch. His granddaughter, Clare, is a well known ceramics artist. The Jordans that ran the Crooked Billet. I went to the St. Andrew's school by the pond before we were summarily moved to the newer school in Ashburnham Rd. We used to play on the building site before the Wates estate went up and I remember the prefabs before the flats went up between Ashburnham Rd and Woodville Rd. I never saw the farm at the end of Back Lane but my moher spoke of it. And Dr Gardner in Lock Rd before they built the new surgery round the back. Ah, fun times. All that open space, few cars and days that mothers stayed at home for their kids.
My aunt Rose Child (nee Brixton), that lived in Oak Cottage, Ham St many moons ago passed on at the age of 101, 7 months 4 days before Xmas 2009. Our family then lived in Sheridan Rd and we lived in Mowbray Rd until my mother passed on in 1993 (Florence Gillon)
I loved living in Ham but it does seem to have gone downhill a bit.
