Vale of Health Hotel

Vale of Health 1898

My great grandfather Henry Braun owned the Vale of Health Hotel (shown in the right of this photo) overlooking the lake, from 1877 until the early 1900's. The hotel was used as an Anglo German club called the Athenaeum and by 1908 had 1200 members - 500 English, 700 German, including many political radicals. The hotel became a factory during World War I and then remained derelict for some years. The hotel was eventually pulled down in 1958, when I was 15 and I remember with sadness watching 'luxury' flats being erected in its place.

RE: RE: Vale of Health Hotel

My Great Grandfather Fred Gray owned the Vale of Health hotel in the 1900's . Infact it remained in my family untill it was sadly pulled down to make way for Spencer house in1964. I think Frances Francis has their facts slighty mixed up Henry Braun took over the Hampstead Heath hotel in 1877 not the Vale of Health Hotel the anthenaeum was not at the Vale of Health Hotel but rather around the corner. The Vale of Health Hotel had some wonderful tenants namely Henry Lamb and Stanley Spencer who lived in the hotel from 1914 till 1927. From his studio he painted some wonderful paintings of my great Grandfathers fairground rides ( the helterskelter and the roundabout). We actually still have one of the full length stain glass windows from the hotel. and am I sure of my facts ...yes i have a wonderful source my Grandmother Violet Miller (last surving daughter of Fred Gray). She may be 100 yrs old but her memories are amazing especially those of the hotel and life in Hampstead.

My Great Grandfather Charles Peters (from census details) seems to have been the publican in the late 1800's - can anyone help me with details?
