Childhood Memories

Hi there, some of you may know me or my family, at the top end of Pike Lane, or 'Havens Hill' as it was called. Does anyone remember the fish and chip shop and the coal yard in that lane by the way? My memories are of :- Helping Mom and Dad with our suitcases down to the station on the annual holiday and calling at Johnsons newsagent in that little shop on the left. Does anyone remember 'Mr. Riddley' the cobbler? As a 10 year old I was petrified having to go in to 'Stubbs' the butcher, there was something about the way he waved that cleaver about. Then there was the Co-op, with the drapery section, and how Frank use to cut the twist tobacco on the counter, then the money was put into those jars and sent whizzing across the room to the cashier and you waited for your change to return. I was only thinking the other day whilst talking to my son Luke about how... Read more

I am searching for a Charles & Hugo Mavesyn Chadwick.
Charles Chadwick died c1820 and Hugo Chadwick died in 1854.
I notice that the name of the public house in Hill Ridware is the Chadwick Arms.
Does anyone have any history of this pub and why it was given this name and of the Chadwicks of Mavesyn Ridware?

My old school which myself and brother attended the good old days. This photo was taken from where I live now.

Hill Ridware in th 30's

I was born in the School House in 1935. In my childhood days I remember spending time at the Smithy, pumping the bellows. Hill Ridware was my first school to which we went by road by the Chadwich Arms, or down a long pathway by the smithy (opposite the Royal Oak). Next to the Cadwich Arms was a farm. We used to watch the cattle come in for milking. My grandfather owned the row of houses opposite the school house and I remember playing with someone called Measley? We later moved to the Pipie Place Farm at Armitage, which used to be owned by my grandfather. I remember my father being in the ARP during the war. We used to go to church at Mavesyn Ridware down the lane from Hill Ridware.

Ivison's Florist's Shop in The Market Square

My parents had a florist's shop in Market square from 1932 -1962, I can see our Morris van parked on the square, with the Interflora logo & our name clearly shown. I was out in Egypt serving National Service when this photo was taken, but the cars & fashions pictured take me back to that era in sleepy Lichfield. The statue of Dr. Johnson is still in the square, but all the shops have changed & the square is just being resurfaced. I now still have a florist's shop in Bird Street Lichfield. Has anyone any more memories of Lichfield fifty years ago?

Friends in Lichfield

First of many visits to Lichfield which led to my affection with this city, that my fther had spent time in during his RAF days at Lichfield Drome in 1942. Many friends and contacts were made here.

A lovely place! There are many changes now in 2006.
