Aunt Tilly

Aunt Tilly, Sussex Cottage, Harbury. Born Mary Matilda, Southam 1863, Ladbroke Warks. She married a William Wells, born 1871 Harbury, Warks 1899. Any information on the Southam or Wells Families would be much appreciated. Regards, Patricia Ann

Aunt Tilly, Sussex Cottage, Harbury, Warks

As a child I would visit Aunt Tilly and stay during my school holidays, I remember she had a well in the garden, it was near All Saints' Church. I only remember Aunt Tilly being on her own. She was my grandfather's sister, born Mary Matilda Southam in 1863 in Ladbroke, Warks. Later she was a domestic servant in Long Ittchington Hall, then she married a William Wells, born 1871 in Harbury, his father was Edward Wells, his mother was Harriet Wells, maiden name Sheasby. They go back a long way, all from around the Harbury area. Mary (Tilly as she was known) had one child with William, named Ruth Francis Marian Wells. On my researching my family tree it seems Ruth emigrated to California. William and Aunt Tilly married in 1896. Aunt Tilly died in 1952 in Harbury. 1 Rolls Cottages

My mother was born in Bishops in 1920, her mum was Daisy Haynes, and her dad was Walter Boyles, who were both born in and around that area in the late 1890. Had a great time there on school hols. Does anyone know of the Dean family who ived in Ellstree Cottages?

Markham's of Bascote

My husbands family were from Bascote. His ancestor Edwin Markham moved there as an ag labourer in the 1870s. His wife Maria died shortly after, and he married again. He had very many children, and used to drink at the Fox and Hen pub - the landlords were witnesses at his wedding! Sadly his cottage, by the pub, has been demolished, but his children all stayed local to Bascote when they grew up; one of his sons died in the Great War, and is named on the Bascote Heath memorial.

The Southam Family

My great-grandfather William Southam was born in 1829 in Catesby in Northamptonshire. He married Eliza Green, born Wormleighton, Warks. They lived in Ladbroke, Warks, in a cottage next to the School House that still exists but is now a private house. They had children: William 1857, Elizabeth 1860, Mary Matilda 1863, Albert 1870 and George 1870 (Ttwins), and Frederick 1873. Royal Airforce Gaydon

I was posted to RAF Gaydon in the summer of 1963 after serving 3 years in Cyrpus at RAF Nicosia. I underwent training on the Victor BMK 1 and then to 232 OCU where I found life a lot tougher than I was used to, tiring shift hours, extreme pressures to get 4 aircraft into the air in 4 minutes, an incredible sight, what must those aircrews have thought. We did lose one Victor, it crashed in woods near Stratford on Avon, and I had to help guard the crash site. There arose a situation over Cuba and I feared for my family, but thankfully Russia backed off. Those years were tough. We had to service aircraft outsied in awful weahter, sometimes snow almost up to the winds. I served alongside some of the RAF's best, Sam Sadler, Taff Evans, Dia the Boot, Artie Shaw, Pete Vacher etc. From there I was posted to RAF Marham in Norfolk to continue in the Cold War, but that is another tale.
