When I was about nine I spent a year in Harefield Hospital. When I arrived I was put into isolation for two weeks. The treatment included a penicillin injection twice a day. After isolation I was moved into a double room, and then allowed out of bed for two hours a day. This progressed until I was allowed out of bed most of the time. The ward was laid out in a kind of half circle with the office in the middle of the curve. The boys were on the left and the girl to the right of the office. The dinning room come TV room was at the rear of the office. Pictures of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs hung on the walls. To the front of the ward was a grass area and beyond that a school house. The Harrow and Pinner Division of the girl guides organised a huge May Day celebration on 1st May in their new Willow Tree Activity Centre in Breakspear Road North, Harefield.

I played my piano accordian in our band and had a steady queue of guides wanting to try out my instrument.

It was quite a tiring event as we been up for hours so that we could dance to greet the May Day dawn at the Red Lion in Coleshill.

125 Brownies and their leaders enjoyed every aspect of their May Day Revels including the visit from the Mayor... Read more

My father used to be the Officer in Charge here when it was an old people's home - we used to live in the cottage just before the dovecote. When we lived there Kath and Ian used to live in the Upper Lodge which was directly on the entrance to the road to Breakspear House. I have very few 'photos of Breakspear House as I lived here from the ages of 7 to 13. I have very happy memories of my time there.
