Memories of my Childhood

We moved from East London in 1950 to Cricklade Avenue. Broadford School was still being built and this backed onto our garden. My older sister had to go to Heath park Girls School (Frances Bardsley) while Harrowfields was being built. I remember having two threepenny bits to go to and from school to Harrowfield Girls school although my friends and I used to walk to Petersfield shops and spend the money on sweets! I also have many happy memoriess of my time at the above school. Miss McGill was the head mistress and she always seemed to wear black but I liked her. Most of the teachers seemed to be Ms! I had Mrs. Salmon, Ms. Gates, Mrs Jensen & Ms Jones etc. Miss Jones was my commercial teacher. The typewriters we used were so old and would more than likely be in museums now! My brother went to the boys school and he quite often spoke about Mr Gregson. I remember having to stay on for the first extended year to the fifth year and left in 1966! Five years in secondary school! I have happy memories of the area though. The white lady on the manor (the ghost), the fights amongst Harrowfields and Quarles school in the Manor. I too remember Wallys Van outside the school. The midwife, Mrs Sexton on the corner of Faringdon Avenue and Straight Road. her husband ran Sextons shop selling most things. I also remember a washing machine man coming round the doors once a week. He had a grey Bedford van and he would knock and ask my mum if she wanted a washing machine for the day. He used to get the machine with the wringer on top (the old washing machines) off on a trolley and bring it up the path. I rember my mum saying he charged about 2shillings or 2/6d for her to use. He used to have about 5 machines on the van. Hilldene Shops, where todays Superdrug was then a tesco'!!!!! My mother had a job at Greens Paper shop at Petersfiled shops and then went to Blue Gates Furniture Factory. She then went to Lovables to do packing. My sister worked at Lee Coopers next door. I remember going to St Nneots Adventure Playground with Amy running it and myself and some of the other girls done a show called the Good Ship Lollipop! We wore red skirts and white tops. I also used to go to the Briar Road shops for a bag of crackling for a penny! My mother then paid for me to go to the Waverley Hall in Briar Road to do tap and ballet once a week. The history of Harold Hill is so rich and to know there were so many people around in previous years owning manors etc makes you realise what sort of area it had been previously. Does anyone remember the market as a chid with all the cattle, sheep etc!?

RE: RE: Memories of my Childhood

We came from the East End (Hoxton) just as Harold Hill was built, I remember the smell of the clay and the L.C.C lorries going uop and down Gooshays Drive which was a pebble lane arched with very large oak trees. I remember my mother had to walk from Kingsbridge Road in those days to Greens in Harold Wood and to the corn merchants near the station for the chicken food. I also remember The Green Tile cafe along by Guy's Field, and Bob's Cafe at Gallows corner. We lived in Kingsbridge before any shops were built, I remember all the shops at Cambourne and Petersfield. I belonged to The Girls Life Brigade in the church at Petersfield and St John Ambulance brigade at Broadford School of an evening. My childhood was paradise, playing in the woods and mainly over the Manor and jumping the stream and catching newts, great fun, in those days it was very safe. I often look on C.J. Tate's pictures on facebook of the Manor, they are beautiful pics. I still keep in touch with many childhood friends even though some of them are all over the world. My memories are full of happiness of the childhood I had at Harold Hill. I used to go twice a week dancing classes at Billie Merry, Harold Wood for many years so I was always very busy. I remember so many things. When I stopped work at Leadenhall Street in London I worked at Lee Cooper doing the wages, when I had the children I eventually lived in Charlbury Crescent and my children went to Bosworth, one at Redden Court and 3 at Bedfords Park.

RE: RE: Memories of my Childhood

I was born at 5 Cricklade Avenue, Harold Hill in December 1951 as Christine Bundy. I went to Broadford School when I was old enough. Our neighbours next door were the Kirbys - a nice family. John Kirby used to take me out in my pram (so my mum told me). I had a happy childhood with my brother Robert who is 3 1/2 years older than me. We used to play with lots of the children nearby - the only names I can remember are Angela ray,John Kirby, Maureen Mann and John Mann. My best friend was Maureen Mann who lived around the corner to me in Chatteris Avenue. I would love to get in touch with her if anyone knows where she is now. I can remember having two boyfriends at junior school - a John Hitchcock and Paul Carpenter - who I think had twin sisters? I can remember going to the Hilldene shops, passing The Pompadours pub. I used to love going into Woolworths there and buying jewellery - somewhere near central park I think.

RE: RE: Memories of my Childhood

I can remember there being a cattle market at Romford when I was a kid. I also remember going for swimming lessons from Broadford School to the swimming baths at Mawney Road, Romford, where I swam my first width of the pool. My friend Maureen Mann and her brother John used to go to Raphaels Park near Romford with their mum and take something to eat and drink. I also used to get the bus to Brentwood to go swimming there. When I was about three years old my mum took me to Briar Road shops and she left me outside one of the shops in my pushchair and somehow I got my little finger caught in the door when a posh school girl came out and shut my fingers in the door. I then went to Harold Wood hospital. I had to wear a fingerstool to keep it clean. I had a good childhood - my mum and dad weren't that well off but I had lots of love and affection.
