Quayside
My mother was born at 22 Quayside in the 1920s. Family name was Milburn. My grandfather was a Coal Heaver. She passed away recently and her wish was to return home. I understand the street is no longer there. If anybody can help locate where it was so we can visit. Obviously we'd be sensitive in scattering the ashes. But it would mean a lot if we knew where the house once once stood. Mnay thanks
Evacuation to Harrington
I was born in Liverpool in 1932 from Cumbrian parents. In September 1939, just after the begining of the Second World War, my sister and I were packed off to High Harrington, as a sort of private evacuation, to the home of our Aunt Sarah and Uncle Tom Wilson. They were the owners of Whins Farm at the time. In the main it was a wonderful time with plenty of excitement on the farm. We enjoyed ouselves in the company of our three cousins, having all sorts of adventures. I attended school in Harrington and was viewed with curiosity by my fellow pupils, I think my Liverpool accent amused them. Needless to say at the end of the time I had developed a broad Cumbrian accent. I seem to remember that the school was made up of one main hall that was separated into three classrooms by two large sliding partitions. I wasn't a very good pupil, I always seemed to be in trouble. Researching Ann Fraser or Other Area Fraser
I have a death notice for Ann Fraser, beloved wife of John Fraser who died Sat. November 10, 1894 at age 44. Interment at Harrington Church, on Wednesday, leaving Rose Hill at 2:30.
I believe this is my great grandmother and I'm interested in anyone that can help in determining if the St. Mary's Harrington Church is the same as Harrington Church indicated in the death notice.
It is a very interesting question for me because I know very little about my great grand parents but in 1969 did briefly visit the Workington area and have one photograph taken in the 1920s or 1930s.

Cumbria memories
Grandparents
My late grandfather Edward and his wife Elizabeth lived in High Harrington in the 1940s. He was a policeman. They had two sons, Gordon and William (Bill) both of whom sadly are now dead. Bill was my father. I understand they lived at Meadow View. Does anyone recall the Winters?
Harrington Police Station
As a schoolboy I attended both infant and junior schools in Harrington (now closed). I recall a Police Sergeant Winters who I would believe to be housed at the police station, which was the custom at the time. I am now 80 years old, born in 1929.
My Grandfather
I was born in 1953 and my Grandfather was already dead. His name was William Bowe and he was the last mill keeper at Hall Mill, although his son John, my uncle, ran a joinery business for a few years from there. Billy Bowe was the last official mill keeper. It was purely a saw mill, powered entirely by water. How green was that. Pre 1945 it was pretty self sufficient down there. There was a couple of pigs, a cow for milk and butter and hens for eggs and for the pot when they stopped laying. The whole family were involved in the vegetable garden and Grandma made all the butter and quite a bit of the dairy products. Bread and cakes were baked and there was always plenty of wood for the fire.
There was two sons and two daughters. In order of age the youngest was Leonard, then John, then there was Miriam (my mother) and the eldest was Mary. Sadly Leonard died a few years... Read more
John Peel Brewery
The smell of molasses from the so called John Peel Brewery as the train from Carlisle approached Workington Main Station.
