Chapmans Dairy.
This building was Chapmans Dairy and belonged to my family. It was originally two houses, numbers 22 and 23, with a stable at the rear for the ponies. The door now remaining led into the shop and the downstairs windows were bay windows. The whole building was painted white! How it has changed!

Hi, my grandad was John French Chapman, he came from Hollington. His father was a local builder. He went to sea when he was quite young. I know he had a connection with the Chapmans that owned the dairy, but not sure how.

Hello Lyn,
Yes, we are from the same family! Your Phoebe Foord and my Ruth Foord were sisters, and married Chapman cousins. I have lots of data on both families and wonder just how we can make contact with each other.
Mary (nee Chapman)

Hello Mary, How lovely to hear from you. Mary, are you still in the Sussex area?, as we are moving down from Orpington Kent to Bexhill at the beginning of June (if all goes well). I have packed up all the data that I have for the move. If you are still local, then perhaps we could meet up when I get myself relatively straight after the move. Lyn (nee Chapman).

Hello Lyn,
Great to get a reply from you. I moved from St Leonards when I married and live in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. I was in Bexhill 2 weeks ago for a reunion of my old Hastings High School year. My son drove me down for the afternoon as I don't drive now.
I am in the phone book if you can find me that way and we can then make contact somehow.
Be sure and visit the old dairy building in North Street.
Mary.

Yes, even I remember a Mr Chapman the milkman and I am not a native of St Leonards. Again while staying at Aunt Rene's and Uncle Harry who was the signalman at Bo Peep Junction I always remember Mr Chapman climbing up that slope from ground level by the railway arch in Bexhill Road, the same time every morning, with his hand crate and bottles rattling. I think I still remember him as a man of average build and slightly greying hair at the time and I think he wore the milkman's apron at the time. He didn't have an electric float, I think it was a Ford or Morris van that he left parked at the bottom of the slope because there was only pedestrian access up towards the railway cottages. I think I was about 12-14 at the time, maybe a little younger. I am 65 years old now and it is going back a bit, but they say you always remember the good things and good people in life and Mr Chapman must always be amongst them. Colin A, a resident of East Molesey, Surrey at the time.
