Park House Estate, Blackwater

Hello, If you know about this place please add your history, I live in Beech Drive which is in the grounds of old Park House, A30, we understand it had tennis courts and a drive from the A30, its boundery is with the Frogmore Park estate and a large house at the corner of A30-Rosemary Lane, more later.

Old Manor Cafe

My memory of Blackwater started when I was 14, for those of you who don't know what the Old Manor was, it was a transport cafe, which stood on what is now a supermarket site, on the right, at the junction with Rosemary Lane. In the late 1950s it consisted of coach seats to sit on, and single light bulbs, but in the early 1960s a man called Don Lewis spent a lot of money improving things, and brought it up to date. Back to when I was 14, at that age it was something new so we started going up there, my father found out and banned me from going in there, but I still did. After a couple of years I left school (good old Fernhill) and started work and my mate Colin and myself brought ourselves a scooter each and started going up the Old Manor. Then we saw nobody up there had scooters, it was motor bikes, so not to be looked down on we... Read more

I would try to go every day during the summer holidays, but I didn't always have the money to get in, I would plead with my mum to give me the money to go, I used to do odd jobs to earn some money to go. I remember one day I went and it was throwing it down with rain, and that didn't stop me from going, while I was swimming it started thundering and lighting and the owners made everyone get out the water, I did but reluctantly. The changing rooms there were very cold and after finishing swimming it was freezing to get dressed, I used to get dressed as quick as possible, probably didn't dry myself properly as I was so cold. Getting into the water was a challenge as well, as the water wasn't heated. The temperature used to... Read more

Osborne Road 1925

Osborne Road is where my Father was brought up in the 1930s. This street was very close to the Royal Aircraft Establishment and this generated my Dad's great interest in aeroplanes and flight. He was later to join the RAF and served during the Second World War.

I was born on Queen's Road next to the off licence, past the Baptist Church. My
grandparents lived in Farnborough from 1920 to their deaths in 1970's. In those days the Allied troops were stationed nearby at Aldershot.

As a young child, I remember feeling so scared as I walked passed the Elephant and Castle pub, as often there would stand an old man in a long black coat and a black hat, and he would very slowly shake his finger at me.Whether it was just me or any child, I never knew, but it used to frighten the life out of me!
