Convalescence During The War at Marsh Court

I have mainly unhappy memories of Marsh Court. During the Second World War it was used as a convalescent home for children and in 1944 I was sent there after being knocked down by a car in Tettenhall where I was housed as an evacuee from London. I was also suffering war trauma and I was just four. I remember a long tree-lined drive leading up to a big house with a wooden door and,on the right as you entered, a room with a big dolls house. To distract me I was invited to play with it so as not to notice my parents leaving. It had a moving figure of a little old lady inside and when you rang the door bell she passed by the window. I soon realised my parents had gone and I ran to the door, reached up for the handle, opened it and ran after them as they were walking up the drive. It was as painful for them as... Read more

Paddling And Picnics

The Common c1965

The water meadows have many happy memories. We bought the wired stopper Corona Lemonade in the village shop run at that time by Mrs Hunt. This was carefully carried to the stream and placed in it where the little 'island' is on the left of the picture. It was always crowded on the bank with people having picnics, children paddling in the very clear waters. On the other side of the bridge you could get down a slope where there were tiddlers to be caught in a jam jar. Most of the land was very marshy and we had to keep to the main paths or we would get wet feet. I believe the water table is much lower now. If you went over the bridge towards the long bridge there was a deeper bit of river where teenagers could swim and a concrete block which had at sometime held a small diving board. From the recreation ground there was always lovers... Read more

Opposite The Bus Stop

This lovely cottage in the village street at the bottom of Drove Road was where locals could leave their bicyles while going to school or on the bus. Unfortunately it was 'modernised', most probably in the 1960's, and is now unreconisable.

Sparsholt College

I had never even heard of - much less visited - Sparsholt before receiving an invitation to join a group of teachers and advisers who were inspecting this splendid college. My work as a careers adviser meant that I spent a lot of time going to see colleges, universities and businesses all around the country as a means of gathering first hand information to pass on to my students as they made difficult choices about courses and work.

Over twenty or so years I must have seen several dozen different universities and colleges throughout Britain but the one that sticks in my mind as the most memorable is Sparsholt College in the depths of Hampshire. I spent just a single day there inspecting the land based course facilities and came away with the most amazing and diverse information on subjects including fish breeding, gamekeeping and horticulture!  In fact the knowledge I gained about fish that day helped me greatly as just a week or so later I was...
