Heathfield And Punnetts Town
My first memory of Heathfield was when I was about 2 and a half and my mother taking me to the pictures there. I cannot remember the film but I can remember a lady sitting near us giving me a bar of chocolate, I guess I was being a fidget. I also used to go to Erreys furniture store and printers which was owned by my great uncle and aunt and when they passed on Tommy Sands used to run it. My uncle and aunt used to run a market garden opposite Donkey Row, I think it was called Jack and Nellie Kenward. My first school was in Punnetts Town and I lived in the mill cottage up North Street. I left there in 1941. We are hoping to go back there shortly to look into the history of the Errey family. I was known as Jean Thorpe in those days.

RE: RE: Heathfield And Punnetts Town
I am a member of the Errey family, my grandmother being an Errey, and I am writing a book about the life of my family. I would be very grateful if you have any details of Erreys that lived in Jarvis Brook as my grandparents owned a shop there.

I remember Mrs Kenwood well, we lived at the top of Mutton Hall Hill and used to walk up to Mr Hayes shop on the left of the crossroads (for raspberry ruffles and chocolate ice lollies) and then on to old Mrs Kenwood, who used to grow the most lovely tomatoes. Our next door neighbours Mr and Mrs Woodrow at Whitethorne Cottage used to sell vegetables as well. Between them and us our combined gardens used to cover about 1 1/2 acres, so it was a lovely space to have as a child. We had an orchard with bees, ducks, chickens and enough space to have my pony come to stay at weekends to keep the grass down. My father kept a beautiful veg garden (and still does) and we were pretty much self sufficient. A lovely way to live and so healthy. As a child in the 1960s I used to sit at the top of the drive on Mutton Hall Hill (next to old Mr Turner's the boot mender) and count the cars as they were so few and far between. (Old Mr Turner had a permanent mouth full of nails which used to fascinate me.) It's a shame it is not like that now. These days I live on Mutton Hall Lane, and am glad to be away from the traffic.

Hi Sharon, I remember most of the places you have mentioned. I did say in my last comments that we would be going to visit the area at some time, well, myself and two of my sons spent a day down there last May. We visited the mill and the owner kindly showed us over the mill, it brought back a lot of memories as when I lived in the mill cottage the war was on and we used to go up onto the apron at night and see the German bombers coming over on there way to London, so I had to go up on the apron for old times sake. It was 70 years all but three days when I left there and I didn't feel I had been away, a lot of it was as I remembered it. It was a memorable day.
