Boac Hatton Cross Part 3

A Memory of Heathrow Airport London.

TBB (tech block b) housed a large stores area in which I worked for about three years. I was on a two shift system earlies 0630hrs start and lates 1445hrs start. I worked in receipts which faced the Great South West Road. I worked with a senior man called John Jarvis, he was very pleasant and took time to explain things. There was usually a delivery of an engine from Treforest (engine overhaul facility in Wales) each evening. There was an overhead crane to unload the engine. Also I remember British Aircraft Corporation delivering spares at around 1730hrs most days. These came from Wisley and were for the VC10'S. I can remember standing outside one evening and looking up at the moon and thinking a man has just landed there. There was a stores cat called Clare. Sometimes I would go to work by bike. I would leave Hanwell via the Grand Union Canal to top lock, then cut across to Norwood Green and go through Osterly Park to the Great West Road, and along the cycle track to join the Great South West Road to Heathrow. The journey home was straight down to Brentford and left by the Macleans factory and up the Boston Manor Road to Hanwell. I remember one afternoon sitting in the canteen and looking out onto the Great South West Road and seeing people hitchiking to the Isle Of Wight Pop Festival. I was very content being at work with pleasant people. The canteen always had a choice of three main dishes as well as other items. It was so good one often saw staff who were off duty come in with their partners for Sunday lunch.
I have just heard that one of the drivers GRAHAM BURSILL passed away in January 2019. I met him in TBA and we went to Amsterdam Zurich and Brussels. He was a great lad and I remember well going to staff travel in Terminal 3 to pick up our tickets. We went to London and Richmond as well. Goodbye old friend RIP.
