The Starlings Of Hemsworth

A Memory of Hemsworth.

Hullo Folks from Richard Starling here in N Devon

Born in Victoria Street, Hemsworth in 1948, I must thank folk from my birthplace for my community and working values. I'm able to enjoy a prosperous retirement thanks to the work ethic which was the bedrock of the community.

Equally, my 6 siblings have prospered.

I'm hoping that this memory Is seen by other folk who may remember, or have heard of, my Grandfather, Jim (Grove Lane) who was very active in local and national politics, and my Grandmother, Violet, who was a nurse in Wakefield.

My Dad, a miner, was also born in the Town, and worked "down 't pit' after training as a parks gardener in Hemsworth park. My Mum, Grace, was very friendly with Andy Downs ( mechanic at Ford, Hemsworth) and his wife Doreen.
My earliest memories....
* Dad getting bathed in front of the fire in the metal tub, to remove the coaldust
* Going to a fancy dress at the pub, top of Victoria St, dressed as a teapot, and winning a capgun for singing I'm a little teapot short and stout
* Grandad taking me to Duckets toy shop most Saturday's to buy me a dinky car
* Trainspotting those beautiful LNER locos down the fields

Best Wishes
