THE FUN FAIR
I don't know if they still do it but in the mid 1950's filled the entire Broad Street/High Street and surrounding streets were transformed into one gigantic bright, noisy, whirling, smelly and absolutely thrilling funfair!!
Merry-go-rounds and all manner of great carny rides, loaded with screaming kids and flashing hundreds of blinking lights, wind up horse racing, coconut shies and ring tosses, roll the penny, try to get the pingpong ball into the goldfish bowl, candy floss stalls...you name it..to us kids it was awesome !!
'Ere y'ar luv...Roll up..roll up...roll up...rollarollaroll a penny a pitch ! I can hear them calling now !

RE: RE: THE FUN FAIR
The May Fair still takes place. Not sure it was quite so disruptive to traffic as it was in the old days as I don't live there any longer either.
My grandmother used to try to win all her female grandchildren a 'bride doll' from the fair. These were splendid and quite large - but possibly more impressive to just look at than play with. However, around the time I would have been a recipient for her success, she did not have the knack. In 1953, as a precursor to the fair or possibly the circus, I remember watching from a second floor window above my great grandfather's butchers shop (Bridgwater & Son) as there was a parade down Commercial Rd. Imagine my shock when a man on stilts, level with me peering from the window, handed me a complimentary ticket! I know I burst into tears because I just did not understand what I had just witnessed.
