The New Bridge

Greyfriars Bridge And River Wye c1966

I remember this as The 'New Bridge', it was huge and posh compared to the beautiful Old Bridge which was still in full use with 2 way traffic. I don't know if it still is as it is about 10 years since I visited Hereford but will be visiting soon!!

RE: RE: The New Bridge

My mother was the buyer for the ring road project. In the bridge are materials she will have ordered and sourced, working for the ministry of roads at the time. The site office was on the end of the Lex Mead showroom (are there still faint marks of the beams and paint on the gable end wall? There were a few traces when I last visited in 1995) facing Victoria St and the old town wall on the corner of Eign St. I remember visiting the ring road site office as a very small child, the smell is something that still lingers in my memory. A mix of pine sap and coffee all mixed in with a strong aroma of paraffin (the heaters I would guess)
It is all a very long time ago, but some things are still clear. I would date the memory of a cold foggy morning as 1968/9 because by 1970 when my sister was born my mother worked for the vets on the side of the market.
