Nostalgic memories of Heston's local history

Share your own memories of Heston and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

It was good to see people's memories of Heston, as I spent much of my childhood there. My father was manager of a branch of grocers called Platts Stores Ltd, Norwood Green, although we were on the corner of Fern Lane Heston and Crosslands Avenue which came under Norwood Green. There were 3 shops in our parade, Platts, a newsagents cum sweetshop and Stowells wine shop, where my best friend Sylvia Merton lived. I ...see more
I was born in 1956 when my parents (Dennnis & Ena Barr) lived at 10, Lime Tree Road, Lampton. Like someone else here, my paternal grandparents were in Hogarth Gardens and I started school at Heston Infants. My main memory of the school was getting the ruler across my hand for sticking drawing pins in a new bench in the playground! My parents divorced in the early 60s and Mum and I went to live with Nan in Cambridge Road, ...see more
I lived down fern lane at number 86, we moved there from cotingham in East Yorkshire when I was five, I went to norwood green infants and then junior school failed the 11plus and went to Heston secondary where I had the best five years of my life, not just at school but out of school with my pals, at the swimming baths and at the gravel pits as well.
I was born in West Middlesex hospital in 1953. At the time my parents lived with my grandparents in The Alders down Fern Lane. We lived there for at least two years until my brother was born and then we went to live with my aunt and uncle in Parkside Road in Hounslow. My cousins and my brother and I had many happy years there. We all went to Grove Road School and our spare time was spent at Inwood Park. I can remember us all ...see more

Can anyone remember a film being made outside the Crossways Shops? Everyone had to stand in front of the shops and wait for cars to come along. We were told not to move or cheer or anything else. I remember standing outside the cake shop with my mum. I never did discover what that was all about. Carrol Beasley (nee Baldry from Sutton Square, Heston)

This memorial stands at the junction of Heston Road and New Heston Road. The church is on the opposite side of the road. During the early 60s the mods on their scooters used to meet up at the church car-park in the evenings.
I remember Mrs Ballard at the hairdressers in The Crossways. I did some hair modelling for her at one time when she employed a hairdresser called Freda. We went up to London and Freda won a certificate with my hairstyle which was a bit space age. I lived in Sutton Square and went to Heston Infants and Junior School. I remember the summers in the 'back park' which had quite an amount of swings etc. We ...see more
