Margaret Bevan Home Heswall
Sometime during the 1950s, as a child, I spent six weeks at the Margaret Bevan Home. It was located nr. the coast. It was a large detached house with a conservatory with wicker furniture. Other girls and myself were often taken on walks on the pebbly beach by one of our carers whom I adored. She was tall and elegant with long blond hair. We were taken to church every Sunday wearing matching coats and berets. I would love to hear from anyone who has photos or information about this house.

Hi Ann
I too went to the Margaret Beavan Home, if you do get any pics could you share them with me please, can you remember any of the layout of the place apart from from the conservatory, any names of the girls?
I came from Liverpool is that where you are from?
I sit here now and can feel the sensations I had when I was there, coming back in after our walk on the beach I rememeber the smell of dinner cooking or afer church the smell of porridge
Was there a little boy called Phillip there when you were there, I think he was the son of someone who worked at the place.
Irene.
Ps, did you ever go to the Hellen Gonner Home?

I stayed at the Margaret Bevan home for six weeks, during the early 1960s. My name then was Betty Connolly. I remember hot sunny days on the beach, the lovely country walkes and country dancing in the sun house. You couldn't grumble with the food, homemade fish cakes, treacle pudding, and fresh eggs from the hens in the yard. The tall blond lady's name was Nurse Farnworth. I made friends with Kathleen Murphy, Vera Clays, Rose Christian, Diane Cane.

Hi Marjorie, thanks for your contribution. Although I now live in Devon I will be visiting up north in May and hope to visit Heswall. My memories are scant but I feel somehow compelled to locate the house and take a photo. Wish me luck!!! Kind regards Ann x

RE: RE: Margaret Bevan Home Heswall
Hi, today my friend and I took a trip to Heswall, as I stayed in the Margret Beven home for either 4 or 6 weeks. I dont have a brill memory as a child, but remember my first day there, I was put in a bath with another child, who was from Liverpool, she was black, this may seem off the wall, but I was a little scared, but I hadn't been out of the area we lived in which was Seaforth and seen any black children before, also because we had no clothes on and sharing a bath with a stranger didn't help, and this other poor girl looked as scared as I was, and had also never been away from home. Apart from when I was a young child I was in and out of hospital. I'm sorry I can't remember the girl's name, or any of the others, I am still not good with names, much better with faces. I also remember the beach and the lovely smell of food and going to church, I guess it would be about 1949 to 1952, again not to sure of the year. We tried to find the house, I did see one near the beach which reminded me very much of it, I think it was down riverbank or Riverview Road? I would love to see a picture of the home, my memories are vague but I do remember I was treated with much kindness, hope more reply. Kind regards Marjorie

Hi Sandra, thanks for your reply. I don't suppose the postcard still exists, what a shame. I bought my mother a glass cake stand in the village, don't know why 'cos we never had cakes, only my mother's delicious apple pie. I also bought myself a soap in the shape of a lemon in the same shop, the smell was lovely. I discovered a similar soap recently which brought back the memories of the Home and started me on the search.
Kind regards,
Ann.

Hi Irene, I have not been to the Hellen Gonner Home, also I don't remember a boy called Phillip, sorry. My strongest memory is the smell of the wicker furniture. I shared a bedroom which faced the sea with several other girls. I don't remember any names, I was very quiet and shy. One girl suffered with bad headaches and she would bang her head against the wall. I recall visiting a field which had a very large boulder upon which we would try to carve our initials.
Like you I came from Liverpool. I was very run-down because I didn't eat much, so my G.P. organised a 6 week convalescent. Why were you there? I would like to know if the house is still there and would love to visit it again. Can anyone out there help? Bye for now, Ann

RE: RE: Margaret Bevan Home, Heswall
Hi, I was at the Margaret Bevan Home convalescing after a long illness in 1964. I have a postcard which I sent home to my parents in Liverpool, it is a picture of the front of the home. I too have distinctive memories of the place, obviously they never leave you.

Hi Emma B, All I can say is I was the eldest of eight children and became very run-down because I had a poor appetite. Our family G.P. arranged for my convalescence to Heswall. Hope this of some help for you. I was known as Ann (Nancy) Ward.
