Eastwood School
I went to this school at the age I believe around 7-8yrs old. I would like to know if anyone out there went to the same school. My name was Sylvia Rooke. In fact I think the headmaster's last name was Rooke. I lived in Keighley till 1955 then moved to canada, my email address is sylviarosiek@yahoo.com if you have information at all please feel free to email me as Eastwood School had a lot of memorys for me, so thankyou and I hope to hear from someone.
My Life Living in Keighley
I was living in Keighley. I was attending Eastwood School at the age of 7 years, I don't know what age I started this school, but I have a lot of memmories and would like to hear from somone that could have gone to this school also. My name at the time was Sylvia Rooke, I think I lved on Cravenrow but am not too sure about the name. If anyone out there can help with this school at all that would be wonderful. Early Years of my Life
I was born in 1936 in Shipley nursing home and we lived at 1 The Green, Micklethwaite until 1944. My father died in 1941 and my mother was left with me and brother John, surname Walker, to bring up on her own.
I remember the shop owned by Mrs Hay, with a daughter Eunice, and my friend was Jennifer Midgely.We went to Crossflatts school and walked there and back. The farm was owned by (the family name I forget) but it began with S. and what an excitement it was to watch the killing of a pig and the wait for the pig's bladder to use as a football. My mother fell on hard times so we lived in two other houses, one owned by Mrs Hurst. At one time she worked for the coal merchant, a Mr Jackson. All coal (and milk) was delived by horse and cart because of course the war was on.

Thomas Binns 1845-1921 No.1 The Green, Later No. 3 Grange Cottages
Hello - I would be very grateful for any information - especially photos - of my ancestor Thomas Binns who moved from Cowling to Micklethwaite c. 1898. He had built Carr Mill Cowling, but that did not work out for very long. He was of the Binns's Mill family - Croft and Carr Mills, Cowling. I do quite a lot of village history research, and most of my own photos are on our Cowling site. I have never found where Thomas and his wife Elizabeth are buried, though both their funeral services were held here in Cowling at the Bar Chapel, which was pulled down 1965/66 - we actually live on the site. Across the road I can see the Binns family monument and vault. Thomas and his family would have probably been closely connected with the Methodist Chapel in Micklethwaite as all the Binns family were staunch Methodists. Childhood in War Time Silsden
I grew up in Silsden and also worked in Silsden, as a weaver at Stocks Mill. I lived at 52 New Rd or shed side, as it was known. We lived almost opposite Fletchers mill gates, in a back-to-back two bedroomed terraced house, with outside shared toile . I attended Aire View Primary School with the Headmistress, Miss Smith. I later went to Silsden Secondary Modern School with Claughton, Leadbetter and Manners as Headmasters. My teachers were Tindall (science), Dewhurst (woodwork and metalwork), Broughton,(from Sutton) two Winstanley sisters (Ethel and Connie), Holiday(art teacher with big boobies), who married the sports teacher Mr Feather. Miss Horsfall (my favourite), Irwin (cookery) and Scull (maths). I remember the school lunches, which my mum gave me two shillings a week for. For the war time years, I think they were quite good. Friends
It could have been earlier or even later....my memories of a girl called Elaine Potter and us playing tea parties at her house with her dad's homemade apple wine........Yvonne Blackie I think lived in the Rectory.....I think we were about 5 or 6 years old.....my name was Lynn Carney then and we lived in Wighill Street...when we first moved to Sutton-in -Craven we lived in a mill house that was on a cobble street and the houses were back to back, one up, one down. I have some very fond memories of that village.
School And Friends
My name then was Barrett. I remember living on Walton Street, Holmebridge. My best friend then was Dorothy Hobson, we lived at no 6 and she lived at no 18 I think. I went to the council school where the headmaster was Mr Laycock. My best teacher was Mrs Baker. And I remember going to the sweet shop next to the park, I think it was called Ogdens.
