HillTop School.

I attended HillTop School from 1962-67 where I received an excellent, if a trifle ad-hoc, education.  Several of my teachers were what one might call 'eccentric': Mr Turner, the science master, taught his subject via the medium of pigeons!  A keen pigeon-fancier himself; he illustrated almost every aspect of science through some reference to pigeons, their welfare, and/or their abilities. As many of my friends became scientists/engineers, of one form or another, one can only conclude that his methods were successful. He was also a kind and lovely man.

Mr Darby, the English master, was another superbly eccentric mentor.  Being a keen amateur actor, he was able to impress us kids with his dramatic skills. Like all good teachers, he read to us frequently, bringing alive all manner of literature.  He was also a very strict disciplinarian. I recall, as if it were yesterday, that we sat, straight-backed, without any movement whatsoever, as he read to us, or re-enacted scenes from literature.  I owe him more than I... Read more

St. James

My husband David and I were married in this old church on 19th September 1970. We moved to Australia in 1973. On hearing of its demolition we were saddened, ee had such a happy wedding day here.
My dad asked the Vicar for a receipt for me. We laughed so much throughout the ceremony and following photographs (by B & B Studios from Paradise Street, West Brom), comments were made about our wedding being one of the happiest in a long time. My wonderful husband is no longer alive but the memories certainly are.

West Bromwich Market

Date is circa: I remember the old man inside the old market entrance selling newspapers, he was always there it seemed. I seem to remember an old lady there too, perhaps selling flowers from a huge basket. Am I correct or is my mind playing tricks? The Dance Studio over Burtons Tailors - this is where I went to dancing lessons with Mr Patterson the dance instructor. This was in the early 1960s. Happy memories.

Having been living away from England for some years it was just so lovely to back at Oak House. I hadn't been here since a school days trip. It was like stepping back in time. and though I realised the furniture wasn't the original it still held my interest. I have happy memories of visits here and photos to keep. Long may it stand!

Hawkes Lane Hill Top

Circa date: 'The British Oak' Public House. My Uncle Neville and Aunty Joan kept this Pub for some time when I was a young child. Uncle Neville died whilst licensee and Aunty took over. It was a family pub, always seemed to be full. This is where my erngagement party was held in 1968. (Many years later, with 2nd husband George, Aunty Joan (with one other pub in between ) moved to The Samson & Lion further down the road - last time I saw that it was a fish and chip shop.

Pancake Fritters From Robinsons Bakery, West Bromwich

I remember my mom buying the apple doughnuts with fresh cream. But my favourite was what I recall being called a 'pancake fritter' - like a pancake but a lot deeper, and with currants and sultanas in, turned up at the edges, golden yellow on top and brown underneath. I tried making them myself but had no success. If anyone by any chance knows the recipe I'd be grateful, but I guess a lot of the employees have passed away now, taking the recipe to the grave. Ah, well, I can dream of fond memories.
