Hillingdon Village 1950's

A Memory of Hillingdon.

We lived in Vine Lane Hillingdon in the 1950's. In our garden there was a gate leading into the fields where Rugby was played in the winter months; the gypsies used to camp with their horse under the old oak tree, by the pond, and as children we often walked across all those fields, now built upon, to the houses in Long Lane..... what freedom we enjoyed.

I have just read your memory which matches something I am researching. My grandparents lived in Hillingdon in 1950/51 and the only memory I have been given is a house name "Solihull" because the people who owned it before came from Solihull and a description of a garden gate leading to a rugger field can you help?
I will of course help if I can! After all I was a Hillingdon girl! Can I suggest that you contact Uxbridge Local Studies - archives@hillingdon.gov.uk - and ask them to look at The Electoral Rolls for you - also you might like to contact The Hillingdon Family History Society- you will find a web address with email on line. You might also look on the 1911 census for your grandparents which you could access at your local library. Let me know how you get on as I am always interested in all things relating to Hillingdon
