This view looks east along the A3. While The Devil's Punchbowl, just east of Hindhead, is spectacularly beautiful, the central crossroads in Hindhead itself pictured in this view is utterly blighted by traffic. The A3 London to Portsmouth road crosses the Farnham to Chichester road here, and then, as now, the crossroads are traffic-light- controlled.

My father (a now retired Baptist Minister) left his church in Godalming in 1970 and we moved to Hindhead for a couple of years. We lived in a flat in Honeyhanger, formerly a hotel but by then a large house conveted to flats. It was then still owned by Mrs Mary Aubrey-Moore (whose Baprist minister husband had died by then) and we got the flat as they were friends of my father. I was posted to Hindhead as a young policeman in January,1961 and stayed until January 1970. We used to make a conference point at the telephone box opposite the corner shop where Sergeant France could meet or contact us. Mr and Mrs Pullen used to run the corner shop.
