Clements Hall

I must have been about six when I stayed at Clements Hall with my brothers Edwin and Terry. Christine's story brought back memories. I also remember the geese, the matron often made me sit on the step to shell the peas and the geese would gather around pecking at me, I was so very frightened of them as a small child. I also remember the tram, we spent hours playing in it. I also remember a wooden gate not far from the tram that led into a lane, I seem to remember going along that lane to Sunday school. The main hall had 2 or 3 steps that we used to sit on and wind wool around our hands with a lady we knew as Sadie Coco, there was an old record player on a table and I remember so vividly listening to 'Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be' and 'How much is that doggie in the window'. At Easter there was a huge Easter egg donated decorated with iced flowers, the chocolate must have been a good inch or more thick. We ate our meals on big wooden tables with long benches either side. I also remember the bathroom that had a long bench with hooks above to hang your clothes. I remember standing naked awaiting my turn to go in the bath, normally they did two or three at a time. The bedrooms were dormitories, I being a bed wetter often got the matron's wooden spoon across my buttocks for fouling the bed. There was also a privet hedge across the back lawn, I can remember my brothers and I hiding in it and making a camp through the middle of the hedge. It is strange I can remember going to Sunday school but can't remember going to a school, I must have done so as I was of school age. I cant say it was happy memories for me but at times we all look back!

RE: RE: Clements Hall

Would love to find out more information about Clements Hall childrens home in Essex. My brother and I were in a childrens home when I was about 4 years old and my brother 6 years old, so this would have been arounf 1949 -1950. Being in a childrens home was never discussed to us 2 boys allthough knew that our mother was ill with TB at this time. I would love to know more.

My only memories of it were a big house with a tram in the grounds, that there were geese that used to chase us and that I was scared of them, lining up for some sort of medicine, going to Sunday school, remembering that the land around there was flat.

Does anyone know if the house still stands or has any photos of it. I am thinking of driving out to Hockley just to walk around that area, does anyone know where Clements House stood or the address?

RE: RE: Clements Hall

I was at Clements Hall when I was about 7, in 1955, with my sister Mary (9) and my brother David (8). We were there to give my dad a rest from looking after his four children on his own (we were separated from my oldest brother who was sent to a different childrens' home). I remember the geese so well - can feel a flutter in my tummy - I was terrified of them! Mulberry trees in front of the chicken and duck coops. The medicine we were given was malt and we lined up to take it from a spoon used by everyone! No pillows on the beds - except for those beds occupied by the matron's children - lining up for baths shared by over a dozen kids - we hated the cold dirty water if we were last in line. And yet I have fond memories of the place!! I tasted scrambled eggs for the first time in my life there, tomatoes were a new thing for me, too. Sucking 'honey' from wild honeysuckle in the lanes. The yew tree and tram for playing in, and after harvest time if you walked through the cornfield at the back of the house your legs were scratched to ribbons by the stubble left after the crops were cut ....
