HSM Guides
Reading Alan Gray's memories was a delight! My Mom, Edith Evans, ran Guides at HSM in 1958/9..... and only today were talking about her lieutenant, Mavis Long.... we used to call her Lefty! I remember Jean Jennings and June Bingham - I've a snap of the three of us at Guide Camp washing up. We were called the three J's! I remember Elaine Garrick and have a picture of myself with June and Elaine outside the school. My brother, Chris Evans, was in the Scouts and my sister, Jo, in the Brownies. I think my younger sister, Judy was still too young... yes, she was.
We used to live in Old Chapel Cottage, Sots Hole Bank, H. St. Matthews.... my dad worked for the Cauldwells as chief mechanic, looking after all the combine harvesters etc. We had a dog, a golden retriever called Laddy.
I remember the socials we used to go to at HSMarks and I was sweet on Graham Johnson!!! I believe he became a hairdresser... am I right?
My Mom is now 89 and lives near me in a sheltered bungalow in our little Welsh town. I see her almost every day and we often look back on happy times, especially in Guiding. I know she will remember Mr Clare too.
I also remember Johny Durant.... he was a mate of my brother's, I think they used to play together some of the time. Also Warren Peale.

RE: RE: HSM Guides
Thanks for the comments Jackie, Grahan Johnson did indeed become a hairdresser and to my knowledge still has a hairdressing business in Holbeach (Penny Hill?). Graham is married to Carol and has two grown-up sons. He was my best man at my first marriage in 1966. I last saw him about 5 years ago. I too live in wales, near Abersoch and run a Wildlife watching charter cruiser name "Shearwater" (www.shearwatercruises.com).
I remember Mavis Long very well. There is a very amusing anecdote that comes to mind. She once had to go to Holbeach to collect an urgent prescription from the doctor's surgery by Carter's Park. Ron Clare very kindly loaned her his car - a Ford Consul. She duly collected the prescription, drove back to Holbeach St. Mark's and left the car by the school garage. About two hours later, Ron and Mary Clare finished work, but couldn't understand why Dr. Deverill's Ford Consul was parked outside their garage. The two cars were just slightly different in colour, but must have had a common key and Mavis came home in the wrong one! I don't think Dr. Deverill was very amused!
I am desperately trying to remember yourself and your brother and sister but can't quite place you. Of course I remember June and Elaine very well, in fact I was a great admirer of Elaine.
