I went to school and we had to go down High Street every day and we had to go for lunch every day, I miss my home town. My name is June Mackman Warner.

Father's Connection With The Park

Carters Park c1960

My father worked in the field that became Carters Park when Mr Carter gave it to the town. He was Cyril King and he was aged 13 at the time, having left school to work on the land. It is very moving as he died in 2003 and his ashes are now in the cemetery directly opposite the park. He eventually went on to farm down Crown Colony/Sluice Road Holbeach Marsh until his retirement.

Talbot Hotel

I was born in Holbeach in 1958 and lived in the Talbot Hotel, High Street until 1967 when we moved to Moulton. My parents were Frank and Beryl Richmond. I have very fond memories of my childhood in Holbeach. We regularly went to the Milroy for Sunday lunch, best food ever! I was a regular visitor to Pledgers toy shop on a Saturday to spend my pocket money which was opposite our hotel. Franklins grocers was managed by my uncle Walter Jones and there was always a wonderful smell of freshly ground coffee as you walked in, and big legs of ham hanging behind the counter. There is a lot to be said for the good old days when food was just the best. Although I haved lived in Nottingham since I was a teenager I still get sausages from Swepstones whenever I can. Memories of Lincolnshire

Old Document

I don't really have a memory- rather some antiquities associated with Whaplode. What I have are two medieval documents that refer to someone dying - probably of the black death that arrived in England & the area at the time the document was written- in 1349. The document- written on vellum with seals- refers to Whaplode- known in those days as Quappelade- to be precise, ""Quappelade- next to Gibbesdrove on the west side". Finding Whaplode led me to this site- but that's only half the mystery..

I still can't locate Gibbesdrove- which must be somewhere near Spalding and Whaplode. If anyone knows where it is, maybe you could email me out here in New Zealand- johnhb69@gmail.com Thanks! John Hansen

Growing up in Holbeach St Marks (The Marsh)

Although I was actually born in Holbeach Bank, and spent the first 3 1/2 years of my life in Holbeach St Matthews, I spent my childhood in Holbeach St Marks. My mother and father Ray and Greta Gray, moved to Holbeach St Marks mainly because of access to a school for me once I reached school age. The house we moved to could not have been more convenient to the school, it was next to it. It was just a small semi-detached cottage, then a tied house owned by HCC Tinsley, where my Dad obtained a job as a farm labourer. Our next-door neighbours were Johnny and Joyce Johnson and their young son Clive. Ron Johnson's, the butchers shop, was the other side. Holbeach St Marks School had just 3 classes, the headteacher being Mr Phillip Button, who later handed over to Mr Ron Clare. HSM Guides

Reading Alan Gray's memories was a delight! My Mom, Edith Evans, ran Guides at HSM in 1958/9..... and only today were talking about her lieutenant, Mavis Long.... we used to call her Lefty! I remember Jean Jennings and June Bingham - I've a snap of the three of us at Guide Camp washing up. We were called the three J's! I remember Elaine Garrick and have a picture of myself with June and Elaine outside the school. My brother, Chris Evans, was in the Scouts and my sister, Jo, in the Brownies. I think my younger sister, Judy was still too young... yes, she was.

We used to live in Old Chapel Cottage, Sots Hole Bank, H. St. Matthews.... my dad worked for the Cauldwells as chief mechanic, looking after all the combine harvesters etc. We had a dog, a golden retriever called Laddy.

I remember the socials we used to go to at HSMarks and I was sweet on Graham Johnson!!! I believe he became a hairdresser...... Read more

Garnsgate Hall

Hi

We have just moved to Garnsgate Hall and are trying to research its history. I would love some memories of the Hall particularily from 1911 till today and in particular would really like to see some old photographs or paintings.

First Impresstion of Long Sutton

I first came to Long Sutton after my husband was given the job of being the local'bobby'We came to live in the local police station, which was an office room in the house. My first impresstion of Long Sutton was how slow the pace of life was after comming from a large city of Birmingham where the pace of life was fast and hectic. I soon got to know the local people and found them friendly and helpful along with the local charictors of the village. Live has now moved on and the village town has grown much bigger,since my husband and collegue retired the police station office has closed down and moved to a larger town.
I am still living in Long Sutton and the pace of life now moves a little faster but only a little. I feel also now that i am not the outsider i once was and with working with the local people have become one of them, only when my Brummy accsent comes... Read more
