Holyhead has seen a decline in recent years, although Swift was able to write in 1727 that it was 'scurvy, ill-provided and comfortless', so recent trends may have followed a pattern. Modern regeneration initiatives have not yet helped the situation, as the town utilised off-the-peg townscaping schemes even though these may attempt to ape earlier architectural themes. The town is an important ferry terminal en route to Dublin in Ireland. Here we see a very traditional streetscape, with original shop fronts and a unified feel uncluttered by the traffic of today.

Tywyn Capel / Trearddur Bay

This is a view across Trearddur Bay, looking south - the beach is known in Welsh as Tywyn Capel. The house behind the beach is Glan-y-Môr built in 1889 and next to it is the Dune Mound which was the location of St.Ffraid’s chapel. Dune in Welsh is ‘Twyn’ so Twyn Capel is correct and it was in the parish of Holyhead . Howver although the title is correct it would probably be better to put this photograph with Trearddur collection.

Learning To Cycle.
I learnt to cycle on this promenade in 1948 and then had many happy hours on my bike exploring Holy Island and the west side of Anglesey. The photo is prior to 1948 as the tall funnelled Trinity House Tender "Beacon" shown top right was replaced by the "Argus" in that year. Thank you for this information - we will change our date to c1946 - Editor

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
