Netherne
Hooley Hospital, although near Hooley, was in fact Netherne Hospital for the mentally ill. Those patients allowed out frequented the Hooley shops, The Star public house (long gone due to road widening) and village jumble sales. The hospital site is now an up market housing estate and renamed Netherne -on the- Hill.

RE: RE: Netherne
I have lived up at Netherne since I was 10 years old and still reside here after buying my parents' house after they passed away. I am third generation as my grandfather was a nurse here when the hospital first opened in 1909, my father went on to work here and so did I. This hospital was not only used for the mentally ill but for women who fell pregnant out of wedlock. There was also an admission hospital for voluntary patients, know as Fairdene. The residents that lived in the hospital were free to roam the area and there were never any problems, I saw them as elderly people out for a walk. I have fond memories as a child and into my teens, as many people who knew the hospital then many changes have been made, a concrete jungle.

RE: RE: Netherne
My mother Barbara Greene worked as a VAD at Netherne Emergency Hospital during WWII in the spring of 1940. I would love to correspond with anyone who remembers the hospital from that time, and it would be wonderful to find someone who worked there. I can also send photographs of my mother in her VAD uniform in hopes someone may remember her.
