Vines Cross Road
I remember this scene very well as I used to live a little way down the road to the right, on the way to Vines Cross. I lived there, in fact, until about 1967 when I went to study in London. My parents continued to live there until about 1986 when they moved first to Heathfield and then to Suffolk to be near me and my family. My parents were members of the Horeham Players for many years and used to rehearse and perform in the CYF Hall which was further down the road on the way to Vines Cross.
The shops in the picture are those of Mr Delves the grocer - on the left and Mr Setterfield on the right. The latter was a bike shop.

RE: RE: Vines Cross Road
I don't remember there being a hairdressers's there but there could well have been after about 1967 when I was in London. The area was certainly known as Delves Corner! Where did you go to school, Mark?

RE: RE: Vines Cross Road
I think there used to be a men's hairdressers below the bicycle shop. The men of our family used it - the barber's name was Mr Neschiepier (he was Polish and I'm not sure of his name's spelling!). I was at school with his son, Jan.
We knew the area as 'Delves Corner' - the family is still in the area.

RE: RE: Vines Cross Road
Hi there, I was wondering if either of you had any more history from Vines Cross Road, or more specifically where I think there was a garden nursery, now Paynsbridge Way? Did anything happen at some point there? A fire or something? Or possibly even further back? I would be grateful if you knew anything, many thanks, Jade.

RE: RE: Vines Cross Road
Hi Jade
Paynesbridge Way, I presume, is the entrance to the 'new' estate and would be at the bottom of the hill, where there was a bridge over a little stream? The only nursery that I can remember belonged to John R. Bell who was a chrysanthemum grower. I think it was quite a bit further down the Vines Cross Road, though, on the right.
As for a fire or other such event - sorry, I can't think of anything. How long ago would this have been? A date might jog my memory!

RE: RE: Vines Cross Road
Hi Sandra, The estate has been built on the right hand side as you go down Vines Cross Road before the little bridge. That's where I think the nursery was, as the people who owned it still live in a house at the top of the estate. I just didn't want to ask them as it's a bit random...basically I did some recording in my house the other night on my phone, it's a sleep talking app on the iphone, when I listened back to the recording there was a whispering man's voice saying something along the line of "better get out" or "can't get out"...weird and unbelievable I know! but it's there and my friend sent it to a paranormal activity "expert" who said it was definatley a voice and he wondered if anything had happened on the land before the house were built. So that's why I'm enquiring as I don't really know how to go about it?! and found this site. I guess I'll probably never find anything. :-) Thanks anyway. Jade
