Horden Memories
I was born in Horden in 1946 (Elizabeth Lumley) and my father (George Lumley) (and his father before him) ran Lumley's grocery store which was on the bank top (21 Beech Terrace - now a house but the United bus stop is still callled Lumley's) just after you enter Horden from Blackhall. We moved from Horden in 1954 when my father's health broke down but I was a bridesmaid at this church circa 1951. Sadly both of my parents are now dead so I do not even know the name for the bride and groom though I think they will still be around. I have the wedding photograph and can still remember standing on the church steps.
My grandfather (Henry Lumley) started off as a miner - I think they lived in 13th Street and started running a shop from there in the late 1930s. From there he moved to Beech Terrace and set up as a grocer.
I was 8 when we left Horden but still have many memories of it.

RE: RE: Horden Memories
I was told when I was a child that the boy on the church roof was trying to get his football, then slipped and was killed by the steeple.

RE: RE: Horden Memories
For Elizabeth Lumley. Hello - I have just found this website. I can't believe it but it was my parents who bought the grocer's shop from your parents c. 1954. My father's name was Wharrier and my uncle's name was Bowes; so the shop became ''Wharrier & Bowes''. But it was always called ''Lumleys'' even though we had been there for about 9 years. And the bus stop was still called ''Lumleys'' too. I returned to Horden a number of years ago and saw that 21 Beech Terrace is just a house now & looks totally different.
I notice it is about 2 years since you posted this comment so you may never get this post but I hope you do.
Regarding the story about the boy on the church roof. I heard this too, don't recall a football or a budgie. Just that a boy slipped & was killed by falling onto a spike on the the roof. I remember seeing the marks on the roof and was told it was blood! But years later I was told that this was just rust and the story was rubbish. I remember when the baby whale was washed up on the beach and was very upset... (from Patricia Sandham nee Wharrier)
