Black Dog, High Street

My great uncle, William Henry Fynn had the Black Dog Inn in the High Street from the late 19th century until about 1912. He was also a blacksmith. His wife was Rosanna and his daughter was Grace who was born about 1878. Does anyone have any knowledge or information about them?

RE: RE: Black Dog, High Street

Bernie,
Re Rosanna, William and Grace, I might be able to help a little. Rosanna was born Rosina Dickson to John Dickson and Elizabeth White in 1842, Mouswald, Dumfries (according to the 1851 census). She and her sister Mary were raised by their grandparents, Thomas Dickson and Mary Glendinning (my 3G grandparents) after their father died in 1846, we assume their mother died as well but no record found. Grace was born Grace Harriet McLean to William McLean and Mary Dickson (Rosina's sister) 5 Sep 1878 in Brydekirk, Dumfries. After Mary died on 30 Sep 1878, Rosina and William Fynn unofficially adopted and raised Grace in Essex as their own. Grace had a child, Ellen McLean in 1893 and married Samuel Askew in 1908, having 4 sons with him. Ellen married a Frederick Henry Eaton in 1914 Rochford and had 5 or 6 children (have 5 at moment). William Fynn died in 1912 and Rosina in Sep 1914.  Both recorded as Orsett. Grace and Samuel followed Ellen and her family to a North Wales village called Penrhyndeudraeth in the 1920s. Grace died in Meirioneth, Wales. Ellen dying in Penrhyndeudraeth in 1983. Hope this helps you, I have recently been contact with a descendant of Ellen, this is where I got most of the above. Happy to exchange with you. Cheers

Hi Mick.
Thanks for replying. This is great news. Can you tell me why Rosanna changed her name and why Grace went to Wales?

Hi Denize, if you see this I want to thank you for the info and can you tell where all the family are? Bernie

RE: RE: Black Dog, High Street

Hi Bernie, sorry about that first message, just found the 'Black Dog..' memory again and it jogged my memory.
I don't think Rosina/Rosanna necessarily changed her name, it maybe just what it was recorded as originally. I think there are conflicting census records as well where recorders have written the name differently. I see you have made contact with Denize re the family. Further to my original post, I have found that Elizabeth White, Rosanna and Mary's mother died in late 1847 in Preston, Lancashire. Then the girls were sent back to Mouswald to live with their grandparents as stated.

Cheers
