Childrens Convalescence Home
I worked as a pre student nurse at the children's home. We took children from the West Yorkshire area suffering from Asthma and Eczema. Children from the age of 2 yrs until 12 yrs. A very strict Matron, scary in fact. We would take the children down to the beach, very large old fashioned prams. I was not allowed to continue my dancing lessons for exams, even when my Mother came to ask. We each had a saucer on the dining table with 2 ounces of margarine to last a week. Does anyone remember this place?
North Humberside memories
ATWICK HOLIDAYS
Our family (from Bradford) would rent one of the chalets on the cliff top at the end of Cliff Road, 2nd in on the left I think. Me and my 2 sisters would walk down to the farm at the end of the road for fresh milk. Each year the garden got smaller as the cliff collapsed.
We had the WW2 pillboxes on the beach to play in. RAF planes would have target practice over the sea.
The yearly trip into Bridlington for a trip on the Yokshire Belle or the Boys Own round to Flamborough Head.
Granny
Gertrude Margaret Whytehead (Daisy) was our grandmother. She was the daughter of Henry Yates Whytehead and we believe her mother was also Gertrude.
They lived at Bewholme Grange and Granny may have been born there in 1878.
She was the eldest of a large family. We know of Alice, Leonard and Frederick but we are sure there were more.
Henry Y Whytehead may have been a doctor.
We have an old black and white photo of the house but don't know when it was taken.
You could have a copy if you wish but I'm not sure how to send it by e-mail. I'll investigate if you like.
We would like to know when the house was built and if a member of our family commissioned it.
We'd like to know where family members are buried if in this area.

Evacuated to Great Hatfield
I and my sister were sent to live with Mrs Prest and her daughter, Olive at "Brooklands", Great Hatfield. We were from Middlesex just outside London. We attended school under the watchful eye of Mrs Pearson of Hornsea. We were there for a year and three months. Prominent in my memory are the Clappisons, Hesks, Stainforths and a kindly lad called Howe. I heard of a request on the Wilfred Pickles radio show regarding my family. "Where are they now?". I was in England visiting from Canada in 1973 with my wife and daughter. I got the bus all the way up from Devon to Hull and finally got to Great Hatfield. Miss Prest was surprised to see us show up. What a nice time we had. Farmer Robinson showed my daughter young farm animals and she loved that. So glad I did this and we kept contact with Olive for a number of years. Curious Old Woman
I have no memory to share. My interest in Dunnington Castle is that Dunnington is my maiden name. My mother had once told me that three Dunnington men came to the United States and had settled in different sections of the country. My Grandfather Dunnington settled in Wisconsin. It would be interesting to find that they came from Noth Humberside, wouldn't it? I would like to see a picture of the castle if anyone has one.
