More about this scene

Also built during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year was Frederick Wheeler's proud bank, now the Nat West, in Queen Anne style in plum brick and with extensive Bath stone dressings. The bandstand, now relocated some yards away during recent pedestrianisation, was opened amid civic pomp in 1892. It was paid for by public subscription, which did not initially raise enough to pay for it: £130 was raised, but a further £70 had to be found.

It was built in 1897 and was designed in the Queen Anne style by the architect Frederick Wheeler FRIBA who had offices in Horsham. It is now the home of the Nat West bank. The bandstand has been moved slightly to the right. An engraving above the main door, now a cash point area, reads: Erected 1897 the 60th year of the reign of Queen Victoria.
