Post Office

A Memory of Hurst.

I lived in Hurst in 1963 and my mother ran the Post office stores. now converted into a house opposite the pub in Davis St.I remember many of the customers names and my mother used to deliver the grocery orders in her morris minor all round the village and up to the Almshouses opposite the church . I remember the local policemen had to sign in at the phone box outside the shop and would always pop in for a cuppa and a catch up on the gossip in the village. I was amazed to see how much it had changed over the last year's. The Wheelwright arms was just a local pub run by Mr and Mrs Green and their daughter Gill.Quite sad to see this once sweet little village so changed .

My mother, Liz Prior worked at the PO probably for your mother! Would you maiden name be Bowen or Bates? She also worked behind the bar at the Wheelwright Arms. As a small boy when living in Davis St, I used to collect paraffin from the PO/Stores when it was run by the Mallions.
My mother was Mary Malyon she lived at the PO with her parents Harry and Ena and her brother John.
