Memories of Surrey
Nursery Nurse & Footman
In 1861, my great great grandmother was in service at Barrow Green Court as a nursery nurse. Her name was Mary Anne Scouse, aged seventeen. Between 1861 and 1871 my great great grandfather James Wood, was also working there as a footman. They worked for Charles Master and his family.
Old Oxted
I was born in Springfield Road, Old Oxted in 1951. I attended Beadles Lane School and Oxted County Secondary School. I recall Old Oxted High Street when it was the main A25, before the by-pass, when the village shops consisted of Deans the shoe repairer, the post office that sold everything owned by Kath Cox, the butchers, greengrocers, general store, the dairy, Hilliers the bike shop and of course, four pubs and a garage. I am still in touch with friends that shared my childhood, some live locally, others further afield: Sylvia Warner, Eileen Malynn, Melanie Tiltman. I am taking a set of 4 prints set in a frame of Old Oxted and Oxted to take as a gift to Eileen when we visit her in the States this summer (2007), and we will no doubt share a few memories of our own. A brilliant website and I'm sure I shall use it again.
Hollybush Farm, Gibbsbrooke Lane, Oxted
Has anyone any photos of Hollybush Farm, or any info on the Carman family that lived here during 1944 - 1958? Their names were Henrietta (known as Hatty) and Albert Carman. Photos of particular importance.
Superb Picture of The Old Factory
I started work at LDN in 1956 in the accounts dept. working with Hugh "Mac" Andrews, Laurence Forbes Ritte, Janet Kenward, Mike Chandler - I can't remember what he did!
I joined the army in 1958 (National Service) and returned to LDN in 1960. I recall Barbara Harling on the switchboard, Joyce Bellingham in accounts? Mr & Mrs Fair who lived near the Diamond, also "Ricky" Ricmond! Jack Thomas (Manager of Holland Rovers FC), his wife's name I can't remember. Returned to LDN in in 1960, worked in the wages dept./Shipping Dept. Names I remember from that time - Frank Clatworthy, Fred Street, Peter Young (Company Secretary). Following the transfer of LDN to Foster Transformers at Wimbledon in 1965 I then moved to International Rectifier next door. Alas the old factory (LDN) is no more. Following an arson attack last year the building has been demolished. If anybody reads this maybe we could have an LDN reunion?
Hurst Green Halt
I purchased a ticket from John Peerless at the Hurst Green Halt ticket office in February 1958 on my way to do national service. On the same train was Dave Newman also starting his National Service. February 1960 we both returned on the same train from London!! to Hurst Green Halt.
