Hyde - so Many Fond Memories.
Nightingales on the corner opposite the post office. What a wonderful smell when you walked in. The cafe (Booth's?) just up from CABLE shoes where I started work at age 14, best chips and gravy ever! Ibbotson's bakery where my boss's wife worked for many years, Mini Broadbent. I was born at 17th Syddall Street in April 1946. The corner shop "Andrew's" provided everything from Fenning's little healers to drinks like Vimto and Dandelion & Burdock. My grandad (Jimmy Snee) used to drink with LS Lowry in the Cheshire Cheese on Hyde Lane. I watched him paint on the Town Hall steps. Had I only known :-)) Wonderful little town with wonderful people.

RE: RE: Hyde - so Many Fond Memories.
Thank you Ian for the wonderful memories. We had to have met. I was in Andrews ten times a day for Vimto & crisps (with a little blue bag of salt inside!). Yes, I remember Ted & Doris very well. Lovely people.
I took mum back in '95 for a visit but sadly the shop and indeed the area has fallen into disrepair. Simister & Chorlton (round the corner) I was pleased to see were still in business & going strong!!!
Thank you for sharing your memories. Much appreciated.
Kindest regards
John

'Andrews' shop on the corner of Sydall Street was owned by my maternal grandparents, Ted and Doris. I spent many a happy hour behind the counter in the late 1950s. He used to make his own frozen lollies, 1d each. I'm ashamed to admit that I had my first cigarette from there at the very early age of 8. I shared it with Philip Leach on Fawley's Field.

John, Thanks for replying so promptly. Given your age you may have known my sister, Jean. she was born in '45. Given the location of your birth, did you attend St Georges' Primary and Junior School? I was born in '50 and remember Mr Birch (he used to pick his nose and eat it.Ugh.) and Miss Bann who became Mrs Rowbotham. Simister and Chorlton, I remember the smell!! We lived in Parsonage St and, in '56, moved all of 200 yards to Woodend Lane, closer to the 'cut' as we used to call the canal. Not sure if we're allowed to, but if you want to share more memories, my e-mail is ian.buckley207@ntlworld.com. Would love to hear from you. All the best. Ian.
